ExtremeTech has reviewed nVidia's new NV28M GF4 4200 Go chip. This is the first I've heard of it, but it seems that it has taken the crown on 3D performance back from ATi

It would seem to me that this GPU has a VERY limited market (ie. gamers and nobody else), because of what is written on this page. Certainly, it doesn't look like the usual laptop manufacturers are gonna like this chip at all.

"NVIDIA would not disclose the maximum power draw of the NV28M but they did mention that it was high. They were able to get the voltage down to 1.25 volts when at the maximum performance setting (the same as the Mobility Radeon 9000) but apparently the power draw of the chip is still desktop-like."

"The two big things that the NV28M is missing that the NV17M has are an integrated TV encoder (for TV-output) and an integrated LVDS (for driving the laptop display). This means that notebook manufacturers have to turn to at least an external LVDS and possibly an external TV encoder, making designing notebooks that use the GeForce4 4200 Go a bit more difficult."

"the GeForce4 440 Go and the GeForce4 4200 Go are different sizes. One characteristic of the entire GeForce4 4x0 Go line (with exception to the GeForce4 440 Go) is that all the chips are pin compatible. This means that all a manufacturer has to do to go from producing a notebook with a the high-end GeForce4 460 Go to the lower-end GeForce4 420 Go would be to pop out the old chip and pop in the new one. NVIDIA planed to expand the 31x31 BGA package size to future mobile NVIDIA products but obviously the NV28M marks a deviation from this path."

I guess the Alienware M-51 will be getting a new video card as an option. Damn that thing is a brick.

It may preform a lot better than the ATI 9000 mobile chip but the power consumption has something to be desired.

Cheers,

lol. I hadn't even seen that when I posted this message. I had gotten in the email about the Extremetech article anways. I think I have to agree with Dug. This chip is a desperate move IMHO on nVidia's part to gain some ground on ATi somewhere. The NV28M needs to be on the .13 micron process in order to be not as demanding power wise. I think there will be a market for it but definately not the market that the R9000 Mobility is in. Lets put it this way, if I were a gamer, I would prolly still get the R9000 Mobility because of battery life.

Yeah, I can see that card in the Alienware Area-51M.

Then again, you'd almost be better off buying a desktop. The 51-M is 10 lbs, and has a desktop processor in it anyway. What would the battery life be with desktop chip and 4200, like 30 minutes or something?

Sad thing is, that damn M-51 has 2 hour battery life, and thats with the optional battery in the second bay. LOL. Nvidia already leads in most markets, this is just to give OEMs more options.

The only portability the M-51 has is,

1. LAN parties.
2. 1st class air travel, with a power adapter. Say a trans-atlantic flight to make worth lugging it around worthwhile.
