It's not essential to have more than one, but I think it's nicer for the cats, no more work, and twice the fun for you.

Is it ok just to get one kitten? Are they really necessarily happier if their paired with 2 or more?

Cloud is just resting on a bed rite now. He knocked something over last night climbing on things. I really have to cat proof the place if I go threw with taking in a cat.
I personally find that as a general rule, female cats are pretty solid rolling solo (though they do get needy), boys tend to get bored really fast and start acting out, though that's not a hard and fast rule.

In what way cats interact depends a huge amount on their personality, and you can get a sense on how different they can be based on interactions in a larger group. That said, most cats would be perfectly happy being in a loving home, regardless of how much fur is around them. Get them interesting stuff to do, though.

An example... When my outside cat(Spot) showed up, she was always in the company of a black cat(Blackie). I never saw them apart. Over a period of months/year+, they quit hanging out together. They're both there for breakfast, and Blackie spends a little time coming/going from my place for supplies, but they don't really interact. From what I can see, Spot's 100% solitary now, but she thinks I'm the best thing in the world.

Most of her time is spent at my place, but not 100%. Probably 90%+, so I can't vouch for what happens when she's away. She's also known to disappear for a day, and sometimes 2 or three( :^O ) at a time. No idea where she goes, and I always worry about that dumb thing. Last time or maybe the time before, when she was gone for 3 days, I was literally online seeing if she was in jail when she showed up. Happens a handful of times per year, and usually in the warmer months. I'd love to know where she is.

She resolves every year to go on a grand world exploring adventure but every time is compelled to return for you or your food or both.

There's an outdoor cat that I don't really like (not my type) but he (probably a male from the tone of meows) won't quit pretending I'm his soulmate.

About eye contact and the sort, if a cat gives you a slow blink, that means they are generally happy.

Is it ok if I actively avoid intentionally petting the cat? Like if the only time the cat makes contact with me is if it comes to me?

If the cat is kinda cold and never seeks cuddling, I'm actually ok with that. I'm assuming cats aren't as needy as dogs. IF the cats seeks to be on my lap, that's ok too.

I'll try to provide enough stimulation if needed(ie toys and scratch tower)

Thoughts?

The cat isn't mine. My half brother lied to me. They will be leaving with the cat after holidays. They told me they will get me my own cat in the near future though.
Consider yourself lucky then. Pets are not something you should really just get by chance though most people do. They are a LONG term commitment especially as they age.

Yeah, I'm totally ok without a cat. It's not like something is missing in my life

The only Pet I have currently is a betta fish

Did something different from my last betta. Started feeding this betta real food instead of freeze dried blood worm and pellets

Betta's only live a few years

Pets like cats are a long term commitment. The last two I had lived for 14-17 years. Are you prepared for that?

Assumiing I outlive the cat, I guess. More than one person would be caring for the cat. It's not just me

Not sure how I'm gonna cat proof the place though. That cat in the op liked climbing and jumping from here to there

Maybe based on that, I shouldn't get the cat

Tbf though, there was no scratch post tower and only one toy

Cats are great. I didn't want a cat til I got a cat, and now I'd never not have a cat.

Found it on the road. I'd have probably kept going, but the girl I was with wanted me to get it, so I did. That was ~40 years ago.

The cat in the op seemed happy and loved resting on the bed while I was gaming on a office chair on my PC.

Maybe my hypothetical cat would prefer to be in the shelters with other cats

I'm ok with that
