Hey everybody,

I know this has been covered a million times but I just wanted to share my results and ask a few questions. I currently have my home LAN setup such that I (my desktop) am connected to my cisco 3524 via 1000mbit fiber (1000Base-SX GBIC) and my file server is connected via 1000mbit copper (1000Base-TX GBIC). I'm trying to tweak things for optimal real life performance and just wanted to see what you suggested/what you have experienced.

Right now the nics & switch are set to autonegotiate. I have thought about and will probaby toy with setting them manually to 1000mbit full duplex and see if this gives any performance increase (i have heard it helps with cisco products and gigabit). With Iperf, I am able to see right under 500mbps (498mpbs) without doing much tweaking. While I know this is probably not near what I will see when transfering files, I should be able to see more than the 140mbps I am seeing right now (i have thought about setting up internal ftp for this and I may well do that this afternoon).

The desktop has a 10K scsi 36GB hdd in it and is running windows xp. The file server either has a 10K 74GB raptor drive I am transfering to or 2x 300GB 7200RPM 16MB cache maxtor SATA drives in a stripped array and it is running linux + SAMBA. The disks in both computers should be able to handle very reasonable transfer rates.

So what have you guys done to increase performance, especially on the xp side? I'm pleased with the iperf results but less than pleased with the real life transfer rates.

try jumbo frames? How is the processor utilization?

Auto negotiation should be just fine. You can search cisco's site for anything that might need to be tweaked on the NIC.

Also if you're using windows filesharing it is always going to be slow compared to FTP - there's more overhead.

I'll have to try jumbo frames but processor utilization is minimal (server is a dual xeon 2.66GHz w/1GB ram).
I'll also look for tweaks on the nics and will look at manual configuration of the nics and ports (why not try?)
Windows filesharing will be slower generally than ftp but not that much slower.
