Gigabyte EP45-DS4P Sleep issue

Having this strange issue with my PC. I can put it to sleep, and if I try to wake it right away after putting it to sleep, it wakes up, but if I wait say for more than 5 minutes, the computer refuses to wake. It acts like it's starting, but just keeps restarting the boot process, not even getting to the boot screen so that I can't access the BIOS. In this case, I have to pull the battery to be able to get access to the system again.

Originally the PC had an E8500 C2D & 9800 GTX+ vid card and didn't have this issue. Not too long ago, I upgraded to a C2Q Q9550 & Radeon 4890 vid card.

I get this issue whether I run Win 7 64-bit Ultimate retail or Mac OS X 10.6.2 vanilla install.

I've tried changing HPET in the BIOS to on & off with no difference. S3 & S1 are my only options, but haven't tried S1.

this is a common problem with some of the Gigabyte boards...particularly the EP45 series...

Common things to try....

1) try flashomg to the latest bios..
2) if that doesn't work.. try using the S1 setting you mention..... as that seems to clear up the problem.. though you obviously will lose some power savings functionality .. but then at least you know what's causing the problem...

OTher posts have suggested that if you overclock.. or use an FSB setting of over 400, that could trigger the problem as well....

I will give the S1 setting a try, since I already have the F8 BIOS.
There is a beta F9a BIOS, but I'm nervous about installing a beta BIOS and will
wait for the official F9 version.
I do overclock, FSB is about 425, but I'm not willing to exchange my overclock for sleep functionality.

yeah.. I am running an EP45-UD3P, and had that problem in the past.. I do run the beta bios, and have had no issues.. but it didn't fix that problem.....

I understand your unwillingness to change your overclock... but it would be interesting to see if that cured the problem.. perhaps try an overclock with a lower FSB, and higher multiplier.... to achieve a similar clock speed?

In any case.. here is a tidbit for you..since I've been running Windows 7, which is on 2 weeks now... I haven't experienced the problem .. coincidence ??

I have built 3 computers using Gigabyte motherboards (P35-DS3R, EP45-DS3R, EP45-UD3R) in the past 2 years and experienced with the S3 sleep problem as well.

I found that, through experimenting with various FSB speed, the S3 sleep function works perfectly as long as the FSB is below around 350-370MHz. Thus, I always purchase CPUs that have high multiplier (x10 or greater) to compensate for the low FSB threshold of the motherboard. The CPU that I purchased for the Gigabyte boards were E4500 (x11), E7300 (X10), and E6500 (x11). With a x11 multiplier and a 350MHz FSB, I could potentially OC my E6500 CPU to 3.85GHz without sacrificing the S3 sleep function which I routinely use.
