Just bought a new Gigabyte P55-UD4P and it indicates a power error (short continuous beeps) when I power it on. I have removed all unnecessary accessories and even hooked the board up outside of my case on a piece of cardboard. The only things hooked to the board are the CPU, Ram, power connectors (2), power switch, and speaker. I have tried booting it without the Ram installed but no luck. I have also "borrowed" a brand new power supply from a local store to eliminate that as a possibility. I'm thinking it's just dead and I've put a ticket in with Gigabyte but I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this type of error before with this board.

PSU problem??? What's the brand and model of the PSU? Try connecting HDD, ODD and other stuffs to the PSU and boot the system again.

Well I tried a different PSU so I doubt that's the issue. My old one is a Seasonic 600W I bought in 2006. The one I borrowed was a Corsair 650W model. I'm starting to suspect it may have to do with the Foxconn i5 socket fiasco talked about here: http://www.techreport.com/discussions.x/17773 Although they are talking about extreme overclocking scenarios (which I wasn't doing) this defect could certainly manifest itself in regular usage.

I don't know for sure but I checked the processor after removing it from the socket and found quite a few pads that had little to no markings on them. If they weren't making enough contact then that could certainly trigger a power error for the CPU. I have now RMA'ed the board with Newegg.

Have you had any luck getting your board to run? Do you have the 8-pin power connector and the 24-pin power connector in and seated all the way? When you mentioned testing outside the case, you didn't mention the heatsink. So just to be sure, did you run on cardboard with the CPU + heatsink fan, and power connected? Any beeps? Add the RAM, any change?

What kind of RAM are you using? Please provide specs and a link.

I had a similar problem with my EP45-UD3P.. rapid... successive beeps..... The power error is misleading as it can be a very generic message....

In my case , it turned out the power cable into my floppy was not seated correctly.. triggering the problem.. I had been going nuts trying to figure out what went wrong..

So .. my suggestion is to yank out all of your molex cables. .. etc.. only leaving in the one to your primary hard disk.. and see if that gets you past the problem.. if not, then try disconnecting other things, like usb hubs, etc... and reseat your video card.. and any other cards in PCI slots, etc...

If that is still a problem.. then you may have a short between the board itself and the case.. or a problem with the case switch..

It's usually something simple .. so keep that in mind.. and keep us posted...

O. M. G. it was a RAM module location issue...I had one stick of RAM in the slot closest to the CPU. I moved it to the second slot over and it solved the issue. Everything is working ok now.

I was REALLY misled by fact that the beep code indicated a power error. What a crappy crappy error message. I would have never guessed that "power error" could mean check what slot your RAM is seated in. The only reason I diagnosed it was that I went and bought another ASUS board. THAT board had good error messages and told me that the RAM wasn't working properly. I had assumed that the best location for a single stick of RAM was in the slot closest to the CPU because that was the case in my old S939 system. Guess I should have RTFM...what a waste of $20 in shipping costs.
