I have a Pioneer stereo w/ a speaker that just started sounding bad. I took it apart, and found the problem. There is a rubber-like material that surrounds the cone part and holds it in place. This has completely come unglued from the cone. I believe that the speaker can be fixed by re-gluing the rubber part back onto the cone. I have no idea what kind of glue to use?? Any suggestions?? My system is now probably 9 years old, but otherwise in very good shape.

There are kits that can be ordered to replace the surround completely - the foam surrounds tend to rot (though if yours is really rubber, rot shouldn't be a problem)

Apparently the glue can be purchased separately at Parts Expressl. A 6 pack of those acid brushes they list under related items might be nice too for spreading the glue around evenly.

One thing to be careful with : if the surround is really completely separated from the cone, there's nothing keeping the cone and voice coil centered. If you glue it and it's out of alignment, the voice coil will rub against the magnet and it'll sound real bad (you should be able to push the cone in and out lightly and feel no scraping)

that may actually be the source of the noise you're hearing, hard to say.

Cot,
Thanks alot!! Exactly what I was looking for. I don't really know anything about speakers, but the cone part seems still centered, and the rubber "gasket" still seems to be holding it in place, but it is not glued to it anymore. Man, I used Google to search, and spent quite alot of time trying to find glue without any luck so thanks again. Any tips on trying to remove old glue?? I've tried alcohol, acetone, and goo gone with not much luck.

no problem, whenever I post a question here I try to answer as many others as I can in hopes that good karma will come my way

I think you want to be careful with stuff like acetone and goo gone (xylene maybe?)

some things can have holes burned into them quite easily by some solvents, not sure what your speaker is made of, i'd just be sure you rinsed off whatever you put on it when you were done to be sure.

As far as removal of the glue, it's hard to say. The tutorials I googled seem to indicate that a combination of a utility knife or exacto and rubbing alcohol is the way to go. I'd think alcohol would be pretty safe on most materials.
