I've been wondering the same thing...assuming it's != prank.

I think free e-mail with the option for POP3 access is always nice. Plus by increasing the storage limits they're paving the way for other e-mail providers to do the same. Shortly after gmail beta started, Yahoo increased their's, then hotmail... even Comcast increased their storage limits and attatchment size limits.

Kinda cool how it's counting up in real time. I went to check on this, even though I never even use Gmail, and noticed I had 50 invites now! What the hell? 50? Last time I checked I had 4.

They appear to be adding the space over the course of the day, so by midnight tonight everyone should have 2 gigs.

I'm actually pretty relieved - I have had as much as ~300 megs in my account and have only been using gmail for a little under a year. That is all legit email - a lot of it is spam - so at my current rate I would have run out of space in about 4 years. I have about ~500 megs of mail archived on my linux box that I've been trying to figure out how to get into gmail as well for the searching aspects...

I'm not saying it's useless for everyone.

Just for me. But hey, it is a great free service.

ah cool, go to the gmail main page (log out of your account)

everyone's account is being upgraded simultaneously.

A Google approach to math.

On the eve of Gmail's one-year birthday, our engineers were toiling away furiously. Notes scribbled all over the walls. Complex calculations on napkins and empty pizza boxes. Millions of M&Ms.

The result?... starting today, we're beginning the roll-out of our new and top secret Infinity+1 storage plan. The key features are:

*

Write, don't worry.
You want to stop caring about storage. We want to keep giving you more. Today, and beyond.

*

The gift that keeps on giving.
1307.899563 megabytes of storage (and counting) for every user.

*

No complicated equations. No tough algorithms.
Just this one graph:

Gmail turns 1 today. And we've always loved a good joke. We know we won't reach infinity, but check out what we will do ...

looks like it finally launched as well -- or at least, that's the forthcoming plan for the near future.
