Only time I've ever used it was to help pay for family travel expenses for the death of a Soldier in one of my units. I was in Afghanistan at the time and didn't have the option of contributing any other way.

Was it extended family or something? We had 6 die in my platoon and I didn't get to go to the stateside funerals but from the stories/photos military took care of pretty much anything for the immediate family? They were buried in their home states though.

that said, seeing this on a GFM would = instant delete

Also: GFM is better than Kickstarter because with kickstarter you need to meet your fundraising goal or everything goes back to the donors. With GFM you keep whatever you can raise.
