Going Out With a Bang

retirement gift Come June and my 72nd birthday, I'm putting my screwdrivers etc. away and never building a computer again. As a retirement and birthday gift (computer retirement, did the other retirement in 1999) I'm making my final system upgrade. I want this case - I've never owned a Lian Li case. Is this really too much money to spend on a computer case? It will basically do the same thing my present Antec Solo case does - hold my system components - but at almost three times the cost.

Maybe I'm trying to talk myself out of it - but I think I deserve a little conservative bling (no flashing lights and glowing tubes thank you). I've lost count of the number of computers I've built over the years since my first one in 1988 - all for friends, relatives or myself because it was my "hobby" and never profitted me a dime. Some of them paid for the cost of parts.

This is really a question of morals(?) - but what does the great AT mind(s) think I should do - get the bling or keep what I have?

Very sharp looking case indeed! If you're looking for somebody to tell you not to spend the money on the more handsom looking case, it won't be me!

BUY! And go out with a bang! We only live once.

Mr. theplaidfad - you win!!! I knew it wouldn't take much to convince me - but a really compelling case to cause me to not get that case.

If anyone thinks they can now talk me (and the plaid fad) out of this case please chime in.

p.s. I'm only living once ----here -------

Hell no, i agree with you and plaid! That's one cool case! I actually got to handle one at a nearby shop because i'm in a continuous look for a good Lian-Li case. Plaid knows what i mean, but i've finally stopped to the allmighty PC-A70BW (PS: Plaid, i found the window version), now i just need to get the money

To be honest, Lian-Li never put this much interest in the outer design in any other case. I mean, this isn't just a tin can, it's stylish, i'm european, you don't know what that means to me, it's a curse!

Mr. Jimmy, hobbies don't just let you go away that easy but even so, I wish you a Happy Birthday earlier, i might not get the chance later since i may have to move and might not have internet access there.

Well, you may still be able to go over to your local Best Buy store and pick up an even bigger, more impressive box made for them by Lian Li - as low as $50. at some stores. You can find out which stores in your area still have some in stock and then call around to find the best store price - three stores near you still have some. Have a lot more left for the system core. There are several threads on the Rocketfish in this and the Hot Deals section. RFFT link:

Mr J, happy birthday! It looks to be a good case, like everything else these days not worth what we pay but Lian Li is good stuff. I bought the rocketfish and was pleased w/ the fitment. Enjoy your new case.

Rocketfish appears to be quite a case and the Best Buy in Roanoke ,VA, about 50 miles south of me has them in stock for $120, But alas, it is just too big for my purposes. I don't know the dimensions but with that many 5.25 slots it is probably too tall to fit in my computer desk/stand. The B25B just clears with about an inch or so between the top of the case and a drawer bottom.

I'm expecting a lot of depth overhang also but I figure that will work as long as the case feet can fit the available shelving space. The B25B is about 3 inches longer than the Solo and it overhangs the space some.

But thanks to all for the encouragement and the well wishes. Stick around - I have my bid in for at least a 105th birthday.

retirement gift Come June and my 72nd birthday

Congrats on both counts! I just love retirement. It's been 3 yrs. and sometimes I still can't believe they're paying me for this!

Nice choice! I hadn't seen that one before. I know many consider these cases too pricey, but I don't mind paying for the quality.

I have an A-10, but some of those new V Series models have been calling my name.

I'm trying to resist, and I can "hide" one of those new Raptors from my wife easier, but it's still calling my name.

Could be trouble!

I "froogled" the B25B just out of curiosity and was really surprised, the prices are all over the map! Well over 300 is ridiculous (sp?) but some of the low prices make me wonder- $250 with shipping from the Egg - and $208 and change with shipping from XPCGEAR???? Are we talking about the same piece of equipment? Is there a chance that there are Lian LI knock-offs out there? In honesty and innocence - can you trust a nearly $40 difference in price on such a quality item? Waddya think?

You have my respect, Sir!

I could only wish I could be in similar place when I hit 72.

I can't comment on that spesific LL model, but I have been using the same black LL PC-60 almost 8yrs now.
That case has been sat on, dropped, dragged, moved, scratched, etc.
Still as straight as the 1st day I got it. It was $150 (was a LOT of money for me, a poor student then).

That said, I can vouch for LL's quality.
I do remember seeing big price swings between stores, I just bought it from the cheapest (then, online stores were pretty reliable).

I've dealt with XPCGEAR in the past, they were fine.
Also, I recommend SeaSonic power supply to go with your new Lian-Li.
I think SeaSonic is the LL of power supply world (best quality, without un-reasonable price)

Like Old Hippie, the new V1110 is also calling my name, yet it's hard to justify since my old PC-60 is still solid.

I'm still half-way through my working life, but boy I wish I could have your fortunes!

Well, i managed here in Nomansland (Romania) to get my Antec Sonata III for only 95$ complete with PSU and it sure isn't a knock-off. I saw it priced up to 170$ in some places.

The B25B i saw at a nearby retailer wasn't a knock-off, i could tell because everything was very very well built, plus, warranty certificates don't lie. and it was around $200... Guess they must have thought something like: "AAAA what the hell! Let's show off!"

Newegg often doesn't have the best prices on cases. Provantage or Amazon has regularly beaten them on Antec. I never look at Lian Li, as except for the Rocketfish, I consider them overpriced and they regularly make weird design choices. You may also want to look at the Lancool PC-K7 or PC-K10 - those are also OEM by Lian Li and are listed under Lian Li on Newegg. those are steel cases with Aluminum facades like the lower priced Silverstone cases.

I wasn't planning on buying until June, but if this price is still around in June is a question. I have to tread carefully here because my spouse thinks all this upgrade stuff is silly and a waste of money - if its not broke don't fix it - - -

I've always eased the process in the past by handing down my "retired" system to her, but ever since the last time when she inherited the original Antec Sonata case she has acted like it was gold - don't touch. I had to pry her fingers from the mouse to clean a couple years worth of dust out of the thing (she got a new vid card and new case fans out of the deal) - so what to do with the "old" Antec Solo?? I haven't measured, but she has one of those computer armoire things and the solo may not fit in the space the thing has for the unit. The sonata s just comfortable.

Let's see. . . . .she just got a downstairs bathroom makeover, new tile on the floor new toilet (the old one leaked, we live in an almost 100 year old house that her grandfather built) mmaybe we can use that -oh- and a new stove and dishwaswer since last upgrade - I may have some leverage here???????

Leverage? nope, none, nada, not happening. Do what I do, I bought the other half a new Hobart mig/ tig welder for xmas,,,, she didn't want it and it cost to much to ship back and we certainly couldn't toss it out so I just stored it in the workshop for her,,,,

I'd be living in the workshop, right beside the welder!

I know exactly what you mean. I purchased 3 rocketfish full towers yesterday, and I'm keeping them here at work for fear of "the backlash".

I would go for the Lian Li case. I have had many cases, most of which have been very good. Now that I have had a Lian Li I could never go with another brand. How often can you have the best of something for a few hundred dollars. There is something about their cases that I have a hard time putting into words-elegant, well made, functional, beautiful. OK, that is a few words, but I just love the cases.
