Going to Melbourne Australia

I want to do the ocean drive (like the PCH in CA), but what else is there to do? I will be staying downtown part of the time and near the airport the rest.

Melbourne is a great city, amazing food & nightlife, lots of good museum stuff, it;s been ages since i've been to melbourne tho, last time i was there was just a stopover in the airport, and i think i enjoyed about three pints at the bar

You know, having lived in Melbourne the past 8 years, I can't really remember off hand what impressed me most as a newly arrived Yank.
I think it was the Aussie women.

Yah Great Ocean Road is a MUST do... but also going to a wildlife reserve and being able to pet and mingle with kangaroos was lots of fun... except the emus chased me trying to peck me to death... that wasn't so much fun.

Damn emus... now I am having flashbacks.

there's the local casino, crown. can also go see the penguins at philips island (I think that's a sucker's trip). other than that....I really really can't think of what to do there

how can you not think of what to do there, it's a great place, i used to live there up till last year, but i go there all the time.
For one, go to crown, its an awesome place at night, and also DO NOT watch neighbours, some of the worst mind numbing sh1t on tv here.

Why visit the Crown Casino? It's just a bloody casino... Vegas, Atlantic City and the Mississippi Delta are full of them.
And it's not nearly as interesting or visually exciting as the major casinos in Vegas.

If you've never been to a casino before sure visit Crown... if you've been to Vegas or even A.C. don't bother IMHO.

I live in Melbourne.

In the city, there's Crown casino; Federation Square might be worth a peek.

There's the Great Ocean Road drive that has already been mentioned. There's a couple of small national parks out towards the airport... for something small you can always checkout Organ Pipes NP or head east to Healesville sanctuary to see some native Australian animals.

Otherwise, it's the ski season at the moment, so you can check out the slopes.

In winter, there are a lot fewer penguins, but it's worth a look at Philip Island too.

Great ocean road is a must do. Stop off at the Wye River Pub for lunch (this is set in a great little cove).

Stop off at Apollo bay for coffee (the last coffee I had there, the barista was st*ned off his nut, but was one of the best coffees I have ever had!).

This looks like fun!

Do the Otway fly, an elevated treetop walk through the temperate rain forest.

If you get the chance extend it to the 12 Apostles as well, they have helicopter flights over them as well.

On the other side of Melbourne there is the William_Rickett sanctuary, this where a crazy old artist decided that making a whole lot of sculptures in the bush (forest) would be his life's work.

On the way back from there stop off at any of the Yarra Valley wineries and get sloshed.

Of course Melbourne is famed for its restaurants, some of the best eating in the world ON A BUDGET. I love Brunswick St in Fitzroy, just about every restaurant there is top notch and affordable.
