Going to Yellowknife (NW Territories, Canada)

Certainly will be cold. Last year I was trying to see the Northern Lights in northern Sweden, but the sky never cleared. I'm going to try again, but this time in Yellowknife. I'll be there for a few days.

The Lights are obviously a night thing, so any suggestions for what to do during the day? This will be around Feb 20 or so.

I know nothing of Yellowknife and needed to look it up. It is awesome that you are going up there. That would be something I would enjoy greatly and remember for a long time.

I'm a pretty restless guy, way more to see than seeable in a lifetime, but I might as well try. This is what I did last year,

It was pretty rushed, 3 days here, 5 days there. The whole thing was more exhausting than anything else, but I did get to see a lot of stuff which I wasn't sure was going to be as cool as wikipedia made it sound. Turned out most stuff was. The trip left me broke, but good things cost

I went there when I was in high school. I was in the Arctic Winter Games. Yellowknife is... remote.

I'd love to see (Whale Cove) but frankly ice scares the hell out of me!

I remember watching the northern Lights here in London Ontario a couple years ago. The sky was this weird greenish colour; it looked so cool.

There was an epic OT thread on it because it could be seen as far south as Kentucky.

I'm afraid I'll disappoint you but... this is the weakest year for Northern Lights I've ever seen. I'm not as far north as Yellowknife (though closer than I'd like...) and I haven't seen ANY this year. Keep in mind I'm also a weather observer so I'm always looking at the sky

I've seen Aurora Borealis a number of times before, but only really faintly.

Yea, it was something else. There's not a lot I can compare it to in my life. We camped out on the ice road to Dettah from 10-3am. Lights appeared around midnight. It was -33 that night, never been so cold in my life. Apparently some of the planes won't take off if it's -40C. Fortunately the next morning it was just -35.
