Golf Clubs...

So I was at the driving range today, and I was consistently hitting over 200 Yards with my MacGregor V-Foil Driver. Well towards the end (approx: 120 balls) I absolutely crushed the ball. I didn't ground the club or anything (I barely ever do that) and the on my follow through I saw it in slow motion. My club head separated the shaft, and at the point where they meet it shattered. I don't know why...

First off, I bought this around a year ago or less and have been very gentle with it. I bought it from Dicks Sporting Goods. Is there anyway they will exchange it or something?

I already asked the guy at the driving range (Who has been golfing a long time) if it could be repaired and he said they would have to bore it out of the head and then attach a new shaft.

The only other thing I was looking at was buying a new driver. The only issue with this is cost because it is so much money (And I still need to buy a set of Iron's (Right now I have a used set and only have a 3, 4, 5 Iron; I have to borrow when I play with my friends (I played a lot this past year)).

Assuming I can get one for Christmas or I can get a job next semester at college I have been looking at Clubs. Could someone tell me what they think of these clubs?

I think my club right now is a 10.5 [degree] loft and I'm pretty sure it is a 460cc Club Head.

As for Iron Sets, this is the only one I found at Dick's that fits my low price range right now. Are these pretty bad:

those are all nice clubs, though in my opinions dick's is a tad overpriced.

The manufacturer might just give you a new one, some are pretty good at that.
The 580XD is supposed to be great, I use a R7 460 myself.

I have a $20 off 100$ or more at Dicks so it brings it down a little more.

The Adams GT aren't bad then? I kind of wanted to stick with all TaylorMade or all Callaway; just like a uniform set of clubs (Without buying as a set) (Obvioulsy other brands are fine too, but I used those as examples).

Right now, I think my club faces size was so big that it took away from the power and everything. I can normally hit around 200 yards - 220 yards...but then I used my friends TaylorMade club and blew 4 straight balls past 260 Yards. The club face was smaller so aside from better quality, I figured that may have something to do with it.

I would say I am still an entry level golfer, but I love to do it all the time, and have gotten MUCH MUCH better. What sizes/specs should I be looking at.

Contact MacGregor. Tell them your one year old driver flew apart. I bet they send you a new one. Callaway does!

Even if they don't, I've had clubs repaired before for pretty cheap.

Sweet...I'll definitely do that first thing tomorrow. That will save me a lot of money (Being a College kid, I don't have much at my disposal right now )

After I call I am going to Dicks and looking at Iron's and Drivers (<-Depending on what they can do for me). Like I said I have $20 before Christmas and I'm itching to use it. Especially since clubs are cheap since it is out of season.

What size club head and what not should I look for for a Driver?

Is there anything particular I should look for with Iron's?

I would at least visit someone who does this for a living. Have them measure your swing and find the right clubs for you. Club length/shaft/grip can make a huge difference and the guys at Dick's are probably not the best to judge.

I prefer SMT. You just have to make sure you get the head paired up correctly with a nice shaft (I have an Accuflex Evo with mine).

Alright, well I don't know anyone who does this for a living. Do you have any recommendations of where to go for this? Or is this something I can get a friend to do?

Many golf courses offer this. It doesn't mean you have to buy them there but it's a great place to get info.

You can definitely get the clubhead reattached to another shaft. A dude I work with does it all the time for me when I am trying out different shafts. If MacGregor won't do it for you then it'll probably cost around $120 to get a new shaft and the installation.

I've broken drivers before because I've stored them out in the cold all winter ... though if you're hitting range balls on Dec 20, I'm thinking that might not be your problem The cold weakens the glue compounds.

As for what to look for ... get something that suits your eye, and feels good on the range. There is always an adjustment period to get used to new clubs. I like blades for my irons, but if you are a beginner, something a bit bigger would be easier to hit. Any of the major manufacturer's have a whole range of 'game improvement' clubs. Currently I have some old TaylorMades, but will be looking to get some new clubs in the next couple of years

I got the x460 from Golf Galaxy during thier promotion where you got a free hybrid with it. So that made it a much better deal. Those deals come along all the time if you arent in a hurry.

I think I know why it broke now. I accidentally left the clubs in the car overnight (drops down to around 28 degrees Fahrenheit) as opposed to the garage or an interior room. I have the head caps for them, but it may not have been on all the way (Teaches me for rushing). Regardless, I'm going to call them when I finish typing this and see if they can do anything.

I like that Driver a lot, but I have a feeling it might be holding me back. After trying the one driver and blasting the ball over 260 yds 4 straight times, I'm beginning to wonder. Would a smaller (<460cc) club head be better now that I am a lot better than I used to be. Also should I look for a flatter loft (9.5 as opposed to the 10.5). I suppose I will find this all out at the Outfitter.

FYI, that is why your driver broke. If you constantly hit the ground with your driver it weakens/cracks the shaft where the clubhead is. Eventually leading to breaking.

I love my TM 580XD. Dick's should probably have an indoor place where you can screw around with the clubs. It's not a driving range but I put down at least a couple of others before settling on the Taylor Made.

BTW, I almost wonder if you'd be better served buying some crappy driver and getting some good 7-W irons. You've got the irons I try to never use if at all possible.

Oh yeah I know its not good to ground the club. Everyone accidentally grounds it every once in a while. Thats what I meant. Every once in a while I would, and not nearly hard enough for it to break when I hit the ball cleanly.

Haha, yeah I know. My good friend gave them to me to start me out about 2 years ago, and we all have a good laugh that he gave me the 3 clubs that you try to NEVER use.

Since this is a golf thread....I cannot hit my fairway woods on the grass. It has to be teed up to hit them. From what I gather it is extremely hard to hit them in the fairway without a tee. Is this normal? Normally I just compensate by using a low iron (A club that I do have )

Edit: Also I have a 60 degree pitching wedge (Err that might be Sand Wedge) as well as a nice TaylorMade Putter and a 3 and 5 wood. Didn't want to mislead you guys that I only had a driver and 3 irons lol.

I've used my R580XD for the past year, and I'd be willing to upgrade to a different club if you want to take it off my hands.

Anyway, it's a great club, but I already made an impulse buy with the R7 Quad earlier in the year and have not had a chance to use it because the R580XD gives me consistent results.

PLEASE don't quote me on this. But if you contact Callaway, a lot of times you can get a AWESOME deal straight from them. We got a Driver and a "fairway wood" for the price of the driver, and it was cheap.

Ok, I called MacGregor, and they said to take it back to Dicks and Dicks will call and set up a Repair or RMA with them.

Ill see what they say, if it is too much money or they can't do anything for me, then I'll be in the market for a new driver.
