^^ It's FAST! I can't say I've found any performance issues caused by fragmentation (outside of what Diskeeper tells me), but I suppose it doesn't hurt to run it every month or two.

You can experience serious performance hits in gaming if your game is fragmented pretty bad. I've experienced this more in betas of games than normal games though. Also games that have large patching, like MMO's, can have the same thing happen. It's very noticeable too.

O&O defrag is the best IMO. You can have it defrag your computer @ any scheduled time and It does an amazing job.

I don't think there's a huge difference between the XP default defrag and Diskeeper 8-9. Just a few bells and whistles and a better GUI. Am I wrong here?

The reason I started this thread, was that I heard that XP's default defrag program does not do a very good job.

I do not know how true this is, but I was curious.

O&O defrag for $44.90? Not me. That's ridiculous.

Diskeeper 9 for $29.95 except for right now it's $19.95 after $10 MIR? A MIR on something bought over the net like that is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of.

I believe that for the most part the defrag found resident in XP is probably fine for most folks.

Defrag every few days and it doesn't really take that long. That or use the Scheduling Agent resident in XP and schedule daily defrag during a time you're never at the PC.

The only time I've ever found XP's defrag to be not good enough was when I had HL2 installed on a fairly small partition. After installation it came time to defrag and not everything could be defragged because there was not enough contiguous free space. Plenty of free space; just not enough contiguous free space.

Those folks at Diskeeper could do a lot better job with their main site. All it says is that the program is great and it runs in the background and it makes your HP run like a Cray supercomputer or some such. It doesn't tell you what the program does. I suppose the solution is to download the trial version and see for yourself. Eighteen megs will have to wait until I'm gonna' be gone from the house for a day.

Sorry to go on and on but that MIR just sets me off. Whoever came up with this MIR business needs to be kicked in the nuts.

I use PerfectDisk

The makers of PerfectDisk (on their site) say, "Only defragmenter certified by Microsoft for Windows Server® 2003 and Windows 2000". As to if there's any merit or advantage to this certification, I dunno.

Like previous suggestions, PerfectDisk isn't freeware either.

I've used diskkeeper. The only thing it seems to do is spit out random numbers at you telling you that the performance will be boosted after they defrag for you. But the truth is, the only time your performance is hurt is in programs that are actually fragmented, and generally has to be pretty heavy before you notice. The windows defrag program works just fine in that case.

Yes it is fast than Speeddisk I used Speeddisk on 2 large hard drives and the defrag takes forever to finish it So Diskkeeper is fast and keep defrag whenever you are doing other task.

PerfectDisk is good, I think it's a bit better than Diskeeper 8.

As well, if you're someone who only defrags once every 3 months, there are enough "trialware" versions out there to last about 9-12 months without buying a defrag program... heh. And no, that's not a violation of any EULA.

I'm using Diskeeper Lite right now.
It's FREE and it's FAST. But it doesn't defrag page/swap files and you can't set up any scheduled defrags.

I'm thinking about spending some $$ on either the Home or Pro versions of Diskeeper 9.

Being able to configure the size of your MFT and perform select boot time defragging might be bells and whistles for some but they are important to me. It has a different defragmentation engine which is faster and more thorough than the built-in defragger or the lite version.

I've used O&O for years, both the free version and an older professional version and couldn't be swayed. I've experimented with Perfect Disk for a while and was almost sold on it ...I didn't like Diskeeper for years but this current version is now my standard.

...for free I'd recommend O&O Defrag 2000 Free v3.5.562 - English (2.08 MB).
Although it was not designed for XP, it works just fine with it and will not harm your data according to O&O.

I've been using O&O for about 3 years now. Love it. It has different methods of defrag depending on whether your machine is a server or a workstation etc, runs in the background, does scheduling... alphabetical defrag, stealth defrag, space defrag.. check it out...

Perfect Disk. With the advanced free space optimization on it gets the closest to a perfect defrag of all the software I have tried.

Unless I'm mistaken, windows has diskeeper lite built-in, it's the defragger it uses.
