I've got RR cable and DL speeds are usually pretty good,I can get 250-300kbs DL's most of the time, but my game pings are rarely lower than 100. Is that good or bad?

It depends somewhat on where the server is. My CS clan has a server within 200 miles from where I live and I ping that about 40ms. At school (about 300 miles from the server), I ping it about 80-90, depending on how much network traffic there is. I have Road Runner at home, so I would think you would ping better.

It also depends on the game too..... some games have crappy multiplayer code. There the ones that cant handle huge amounts of players at once... See UT vs T2 for example. UT really starts lagging when 15 people join one server but Tribes 2 can support 50-70 people at once....

oh yeah, most of the time pings are 150-250. Is that a realistic ping to play at?

i guess im a bit stupid. I thought lag, or the effect of a crappy/overloaded sever, was different from ping. oh boy! I play only RTCW.

I tend to stay around 10 or so for pings. Just using a little fiber network my friends wired up between our houses .

My friends server is located on the west coast, but about 400 miles away. On my current Verizon line, i ping about 60-70ms. My brother, who lives about 3 miles from me, is on Pacbell's line and he pings about 40-50 to the same server. I'd have to say than anything less than 100ms is very good and anything less than 60 is ideal.

ouch... I prefer my pings to be around 30-60... anything more than that, and my buying becomes rather latent, and I hate that...

Pings are also varied by the latency of your line or svc..
I have DSL and I ping anywhere from 20-60.. The lower the ping obviously the better, and higher advantage it gives you against others..
You might call RR and ask them to put a Booster on your line, or see if they can tweak it..
I know from personal experience that cable should have lower pings than most DSL... Cable is generally faster with higher dl speeds..
I only get about 156kbs. download speeds but my pings on Severs are great... I play Tribes 1 and 2...
Well good luck with your gaming...
Oh yeah Btw.. Your NIC isnt bad... That is something that works or it doesn't..
You might also try testing your line here.. this will give you some idea if anything is wrong.

Test running..........
** Speed 1194(down)/355(up) kbps **
(At least 23 times faster than a 56k modem)
Logged result.
Finish.

A little slower than usual...but from all I hear I should be getting better pings than this. The problem is that RR tech support doesnt know what ping is. I've asked them about this problem before and they just shrug it off.

Lower is always nicer, but anything below 250 is playable. Consistentcy is much more important than lower ping, IMO.

Maybe you are playing at too high of a res? IE 1600x1200 causing your comp to lag

Or if you are playing a half-life type game, type rate 9999 in the console

Ping is somewhat over rated. If you have a ping of 50-100 with lots of packet loss and lag its just as bad as having a ping of 400. A ping with a good smooth connection under 200 is very playable. If your connection is good, then the lower your ping the better.

In UT tac ops, anything over 125 and you actually need to lead off a little bit when you shoot, so they'll run into your bullets, otherwise if you shoot directly at them you'll miss.

hey i got road Runner cable too, except i get nice pings, like usually under 60 in a good server... maybe you are playing at the wrong servers... because if you get those good download speeds, then i dont think it would be your nic.

If you live with 56k for 5 years, 200 is certainly playable for most games. I now have cable and usually ping under 100 no matter what game I'm playing, but I'll agree that it really depends on the game. When you hit 150 or so in UT things start to get really laggy. However, saying that you need sub 100 pings in all games simply isn't true.

I have DSL and get 100 to 150k a sec downloads.

My pings are usually 80 - 150 depending on what game I play.

hey its better than my 350 ping with my 56k
