My friend is looking for some good headphones that are capable of playing heavy metal with high volume and have good bass, he said hes willin to spend around 50-70 dollars for them. I dont know much about headphones for listening to music, so i dont know what to tell him. any suggestions would be appreciated.

A friend has a pair of Sennheisers (don't know the model) that were in that price range that sounded great to me on my PC.

I think it was these.

Sennheiser 280s can be had in that price range used, or new if you find a really good deal. They sound good and go loud without an amp.

Agreed again. Except I'd go for SR80's. I've had both and the SR80 sounds better in pretty much every way, yet only costs about $25 more.

But don't let that take anything away from the SR60. It's one of the best headphones you can get for under $60. For many people, it would be the best headphone they have ever had the pleasure of listening to.

Sony MDR-7506 (go to www.sony.com/proaudio). They list at 130 USD, but can be found for about 20 bux less online. They are leaps and bounds
above any consumer-level product, except for maybe some really high end sennheisers or any grado. They are broadcast quality. Search for reviews
on them at google and you'll see.

i will staunchly reccomend my Grado SR-80's... i consider by far the best pair of headphones you can buy for under $100. the one possible caveat is that your friend wanted lots of bass... grado's tend to be more solid in the highs/mids. he can always tweak his eq though, and the bass does not sound muddy like cheaper sennheisers.

Sony 7506 are the V6's with a gold connector.

I use the V6 and I think they can be had for ~$70 new. Great headphones in that pricerange. Unbeatable to me, but there are individual preferences to consider too. Known for great bass with no amplification to speak of.

Sennheiser HD-580s. You can find them as cheaply as $110-120 if you're lucky.

Best headphones money can buy in that pricerange. Great sound quality and basically equivalent in sound quality to the HD600s.

The 580's usually need an amp and I've heard they're more geared towards classical type music.

I've been using my MDR-V6 headphones with my portable for a few years now and they're great!

Here's a good comparison of pretty much all the headphones from sennheiser and beyerdynamic

HD497 ($60) vs. DT231 Pro ($59)
I thought I just do a quick one, as they are similarly priced.
Size of pads are about the same, but the Beyers are velour, and much more comfortable. Both are easily driven by portables. Of course, the Beyer is also closed, which is good. DT231 wins construction and ergonomics.
I actually haven't listened to the DT231 in ages, as my girlfriend has been using them a lot. But this is a nice phone.
Soundwise, the HD497 has a more powerful bass, but the DT231 is much more balanced, it actually HAS a midrange. The Beyer is also more refined and smooth, its highs are downright pleasant and earfriendly. Hmm...I'm surprised...the Beyer is better on just about every count, and it isn't even silver.
To be honest, the HD497 doesn't stand a chance. Although, in favour of the Senn, it isn't broken in, but I can't imagine it changes character enough to be a competitor to the DT231. Very interesting.

Looks like the beyerdynamic a winner!

True. They can be very good for rock music, but regardless of the type of music you will need an amp for best sound. My Audigy 2 got them to a decent volume, but you could tell they weren't being driven properly because there was no impact...the music had no slam. An amp would have improved things nicely but I sold them because I preferred my Grados (not only are they way more efficient, I just prefer the Grado sound signature. When I listen to Grados after Senns, it is as if a veil has been lifted from the music).

I have a pair of Sennheiser 280Pros and they are seriously the best headphones I've ever put on. Thing is iits not for everyone. I think most consumers don't like them, because they don't have that hyped sound to it. These headphones have a pretty flat requency response, and don't have the heavy bass your friend's looking for. They are more for studio purposes, where you need flat response headphones for critical listening.
