go to a dedicated sound shop and look at their headsets. For the best music/sound, get the headphones that completely cover your ears with the solid shells. This filters the outside noise plus gives better frequency response. I had an old set of Koss studio headphones; heavy in weight but you could hear the pick on the strings when they were playing!!!!! Nearly 10 years ago they cost me $79 on sale so........

Look out for some called Beyer DT231 They are around 60 dollars but they are well worth the extra dosh! Trust me they are the best or alternately, there are another pair made by the same company but are called Beyer DT75 they are about 50 still abit above but they got top top ratings!

Happy shopping...

I don't wanna throw out a useless suggestion, but I recently bought a kickass pair for 30 bucks at Best Buy. They're extremly comfortable and offer great sound. Oh, and theres a handy little mute button on the left side.

Anyways, heres the model and make

Some sealed headphones don't give good bass because sealing the drivers raises their resonance frequency and so makes the bass start to fall at a higher frequency. This isn't a problem with open-air headphones, like the kind used for all Walkmen, and any open headphones with voice coils at least .6-.7" diameter will give good bass. Sennheiser originated open-air headphones and still makes good ones. Open-air speakers don't work because when the ear is more than a diameter or half a diameter away from the cone the sound waves emitted from the back of the speaker cancel those coming from the front.

I have a pair of headphones from Sony and I can't stop saying good things about them. Their bass is great and even though they are open-air they don't let too much sounds out into the air because of their design. They are the kind that are just two pieces each with a clip that goes onto your ear. Very nifty if you ask me and very comfortable.

The only problem with Sennheisers are that the cheaper ones which are within your budget are suck they only get 3 stars out of 5 for quality and stuff. the Beyer ones got 5 out of 5 and are slightly above your budget, the good Sennheisers start from about 80 dollars, and go rite up to 10,100 dollars, yes no joking 10,100 dollars! Those ones got 5 starts out of 5 and I dought you will go for them. So the best bet are the Beyers, but the choice is yours.. And in the test the Aiwa HP-X222 got 3 stars out of 5 and the comment afterwards was: Struggle to separate instrumental laters but remain listenable - useful 'Mute' button. For the Beyers this is what the comments were: Beyer DT75: Light and comfortable and blend terrific sweetness with good, open, IMPRESSIVE imaging. The Beyer DT231: BEST BUY in the 2000 Awards, Big, RICH BASS that is controlled enough not to distort. Those were the comments given by the best music magazine in the whole of the United Kingdom, What HiFi magazine, and I won't argue with them. But still the choice is yours and go by your own instincts but these are just some guiders to guide you to the headphones you want.

Good Luck,

SKY.

Don't forget Grado. They aren't a well-known company but they offer great price/performance headphones. Check out their Grado sr60's. They should be in your price range. I picked up the sr80's for about 80 bucks.

Under $40? I'd go for the Koss SportaPro (under $30), or the nearly identical Radio Shack PRO-35 ($40 or so; cheaper when on sale). I've never heard a good pair of Sony headphones. They might exist, but if so they're avoiding me . If you can swing a bit more cash ($80 or so), then consider the Grado SR-80.

like i said the grado sr60's should be just right for you. I think they are about 50-60 dollars. It's not quite under 40 bucks but these headphones will not leave you disappointed.

Whatever you do NOT buy Seinheizers though they may be great headphones they do not give you the $150 + sound you would expect after paying that much. Any set of head phones are great but its up to you to find a set that feels comfortable and sound good to YOU. So good luck and have fun.

another vote for grados, good for the price range. again this is a more personal issue with sound, just go to some shops and try them out and see what you like and sounds good and feels comfortable. Thats what i did at a Good Guys, tested out ALL the headphones on display, like over 30 or so, and i ended up with sennheisers hd 580 but were VERY impressed with the grado sr80.

Just did a little research on the Grados. Everybody seems to think they're uncomfortable .. after about an hour .. cuz they sit (directly) on the ear .. true?

didnt stay at good guys long enough to get a feel for comfort, but i can see how the grados can get a little uncomfy after a while. I dont see it as a big thing though. But, the senhheisers are heaven to wear.

I love the Grados but I keep breaking them

One side blew out on my first set, had them replaced under warranty but it took several months.
Now I've broken the size slider on one side, so I've taped them up.

They really have awesome base and great sound, however I have nothing to compare them to.

If you're just listening to mp3's and playing video games, they're as good as anything

Radboy-

You're right about the Grados hurting your ears, forgot to mention that. They really press your ears into your head, and give you bad earaches, but aside from that, !

A good place I have found for both Grado and Sennheiser (in fact, that is all they sell) is here:

http://www.audioadvisor.com/browsecategory.cfm?CategoryID=HEADPHON

You can get B-series Sennheiser 490's there for 50 bucks! wow! Half-off. They have other B series at other times (B series are refurbished demo/trade show versions with the same warranty, usually only used a few hours) For a real laugh check out the $1500 headphones.

I have used Sennseisers for over 20 years now, starting with the original open-airs, the HD 414s (went through 3 pairs of these!). I have to love open air, but the bass is still not as perfect as the closed headphones. For all-day use though, and not completely shutting yourself off from the outside world, consider open air. They are the only type of headphone I can wear 14 hours straight in Everquest without even noticing I have them on. If I was doing DJing or recording or something that I absolutely had to block out outside noise, I would definatly go for closed, but there is no way in hell I would want closed for my computer.

The Sennheiser HD-490's are not very good.I got a pair of b-stocks a few months ago and I think I wasted $50.

For under $40 you can get the koss sportapro's for about $20 at circuit city and they are much better IMHO. I got the portapro's (same driver as the sportapro) from amazon.com and they are much better than my 490's, which sound muddy. My portapro's have clearer highs and a _lot_ of bass. If you're willing to spend a little more than $40 then try the Grado SR-60's.

Also, a good place to read about headphones is Headwize

what program could you use to adjust the sound on the computer if there is no level adjustment on the headphones?
