Does anyone have a suggestion for good headphones? Availibility in Canada would obviously be a big plus... budget is not really a concern to a certain extend (I.E. No $500 headphones)... thanks

Crap..being the smart guy I search AFTER I post and there's a very similar thread already... woops...

Check out Sony's line of headphones. I have a pair of MDR-V6's, and they work great. I spent about 70 bucks on them at least 6 months ago. Their top of the line products run around 100-120 I think. There are other more specialized brands out there that may carry better sets, but some greatly exceed Sony's prices (which are already high for a pair of headphones, imo, oh well).

I can't speak highly enough about the Grado SR-60's.. I got mine for around $70 and they sound amazing. They aren't 'cool' to look at- but they are comfortable (more than the Sony's IMHO) and they are very versatile. The Sennheisers are also nice but you have to watch which ones you get as some can be very application dependant.

What you should do is go to Audio Review and start reading. Then pick a handful and go to a hi-fi shop and pick the ones that you like the best (take a sample of CD's with you) then pick the one and go online and search for them

good luck

Check out Headphone.com for information, reviews, and purchasing.

They basically say that the best price/performance headphone under $100 is the Grado SR-60 and that any of the higher-end (more expensive) phones need an amp to reallly shine.

I took their advice and went with the SR-60's since I was looking for an open style headphone to use while on my computer. My only complaint is that they hurt my ears after a while, but I knew what I would be getting into before purchasing them.

Not wishing to overlook the obvious . . . however, have you adjusted the headband by bending it outward? Mine hurt at first (I guess I have a fat head).

The SR60s are an excellent headphone and they are especially awesome coupled with any portable (cd player/notebook, etc.) . . . highly recommended.

Q-audio has trhem for $65.50 shipped Good service!

i rather like my sennheiser hd-280 pros. they sound good. they're analytical. pretty good positional audio. they're closed, to minimize the noise my comp/background noise in this room.
some people don't like them... as the bass isn't very "thuddy". it's more tight, but they work for me.
they can be had for < $100

Open headphones should not hurt your ears

Not really. If you look at the design of Grado, they rest right on your ear so they are bound to get uncomfortable after awhile. That's the main reason I sold my SR60's.

alot of ppl recommend the Grados SR series... and the best bang for the buck is certainly the 60.
just to give you another choice, Sennheisers are good too, personally I had the 545, 570, and the 490.
490 sucks, but i heard the 495 is quite good, otherwise I would stay away from 4xx series. the 570 is a teardrop design (cool looking) but somehow I felt the old-school design of the 545 somehow sounds better. the 580 can be found on ebay for 140 bucks and is probably the best headphone in the 100-199 price range. I had the 600 a while back for 220 dollar but then sold it immediately to my friend.

also, the Sony V6 is good too

Sony V6

http://www.millionbuy.com/snymdrv6.html

-Very comfortable.
-Sealed (means less sound leaks out to other people in the room compaired to open air headphones)
-Doesn't need an amp.
-Sounds Great
-Good price ( around $70 )

The main reason I chose the V6 over the SR60 was the fact that I don't like the way the SR60s sit on your ears. I actually bought two pairs of V6s. One for home and one for work. The fact that they don't leak sound to people around you is a good thing in the office.
