Hello

I'm looking for a good HSF for my soon-to-be-gotten AMD XP 2000+ CPU. I've got an AMD 1.4 right now, with a ThermalTake Volcane 6 Cu, which keeps the temps around 50C (airflow in the case is terrible right now, looking to change some cables with rounded ones and install a fan or two).

Since the new CPU will pump out quite a lot of heat, i'm wonderng what HSF would be good to cool it. I hate noise, so it should be a quiet one, atleast not going above this one i've got now (31db as stated on the ThermalTake website).

I'm not going to oc the cpu, so it doesn't have to have raw power.

any advise?

thanks!

The Alpha coolers are great (and quiet), but a bit expensive (at least they were when I bought mine coolers last year). Put a Panaflo 120mm (low power) fan onto your case to take care of the case temps; it is big, quiet and moves macho air.

For my dual MP 2000+, I have a pair of Thermalright SK6 (excellent workmanship)
use fans to suit your taste, but mine are
YS Tech 60x25mm fans
NFD1260257B-2A
24 CFM / 34 dBA
2.2W /4300 rpm / 3 pin
You do not need any bigger heatsink or louder fans than above.
Just for the record, prior to my 2000+ chips, I had 1.2GHz MPs and only needed low power fans:
Adda 60x25mm fan
AD0612MB-A73GL
18 CFM / 24 dBA
1.7 W /3500 rpm /3 pin
Nice and quiet. I then added the 120mm Panaflo and the YS Tech fans for instant cooling. I may try to switch back to the Adda low power fans just to make it even more quiet; don't know if they will work though with the higher speed chips. My personal taste is to not exceed 30 db for any one fan in my case. The peace and quiet is wonderful.

the xp 2000+ runs cooler than your current 1.4. the stock cooler is fine, or just use your old one

and btw, the xp 2000+ is not that much faster than your current 1.4. do you really need to upgrade, you might see a 10% - 12% increase in games, and you wouldn't even notice the diff in work apps

True, but I can sell this cpu to someone, and when i cough up an additional 10EUR i can have a brand new one PP

And, besides, it's the fastest my mobo allows me to go... doing this upgrade means that i will be able to keep the box somewhat longer.

And i'll also have the benefit of having a cpu again that's still under warranty P
