Call me weird, but I'd rather have a closed source driver that works well like Nvidia's binary drivers, instead of an open source driver like Intel's that sucks.
That is the sane choice, if you have to choose. Having to choose implies that you can choose.

Well, even now one can choose between Nvidia's binary driver and an open source guess. Basing the open source driver on specs rather than guesses would not guarantee a miracle, but it would be progress.

It depends on the application. Intel graphics might suck for gaming, but they're more than enough to handle light office work and various business applications.

That said, when your drivers are so flaky that they can't even reliably do THAT right most of the time under Linux, you know that you have problems.
Intel graphics suck hard at anything Radeon and nvidia clean the floor with Intel graphics anyway you look at it under linux, OSX and Windows or any other OS. Linux works perfectly fine on my nvidia GPU with out the nvidia proprietary drive enabled end of story.

I don't really understand your guys arguement over this.

Some of the brightest minds on earth refuse to work for the man. It's guys like this that lurk in the world of Linux in the first place.

Defending nvidia for not releasing open source drivers or at least cooperating with the linux community seems silly to me.

UM you completely missed the point for I as a (((PAYING))) nvidia customer and user I am fucking pissed for getting shafted with half baked propitiatory Geforce drivers on Linux.

Whats halfbaked about it?
AFAIK NVIDIA's driver is better than AMD's under linux...so what is your point?
That you don't have any arguments and retort to FUD?

Ask around...your definition of "halfbaked" is hillarious though!

Blaming NVIDIA for not releasing open source driver under linux (when their closed soruce drivers work just fine) is more silly in my eyes *shrugs*

Hypothetical situation: Linux geek in Sweden looks at nvidias open source drivers and scratches head. Thinks what the **** were they thinking. Deletes a line of code, edits another, adds a few more and 20% of free performance. Or possibly gives you the all mighty physX wonder for only a 5% hit on fps. Guess nothing like this could ever happen tho as nvidias driver team is made up of gods! Things like this can happen in real life. Like I said some of the greatest minds on earth won't work for the man. They do tend to like making the man look bad tho. Guess maybe in the end it's what nvidia is afraid of.

Yes, Nvidia is about making money selling hardware and the more upgrades the better, but their Tegra and Tesla lines depend on linux and the linux kernel so it's not like they're not making money of the kernel group's work.

Kinda makes me wonder if the only reason is because they disable features at the driver level. If the drivers were open source then this could be bypassed allowing lower price cards to do the job....Corporate greed seems like a viable reason to me.

UM when not installing any nvidia drivers at all works much better than installing them you knows nvidia's serving up a busted driver product however good thing Linux is rock solid stable at leased it has been for me but it took a bunch of research on my end to work around the nvidia driver pitfalls.

Notice how the talk is converging on the differences in OS'es..and not videocards...
That's because it was posted in the wrong forum. OT, *nix Software, and OSes would all be better places for the thread to have been created in.

Give me one good reason to why I should pay for open source NVIDIA drivers on linux?

Because that is what Linus is saying.
He wan't NVIDIA (read: the consumers) to pay for open source drivers on linux...and flips the bird as a powerfull "argument"...for not being taken seriously.
So Intel, AMD, Realtek, Marvell, Broadcom, Silicon Image, and so on, should not support a popular OS for their hardware? If NVidia would just offer up specifications for the hardware, there are already people willing to handle the work. Nouveau is in mainline. Nouveau could be much better in every way, if NVidia would just dump a big partially-redacted PDF of HW specifications on them. Do that for the GPUs, and other special parts of their ARM SoCs, and everyone would be happy.

How would you like to have hardware you would like to use, that won't work, because NVidia refuses to support it (IE, Optimus); while ancient esoteric chips are getting better quality support than ever (3D OpenGL works on a S3 Savage! Seriously!)?

Why should NVIDIA spend resources/manpower on making open source drivers for linux?
Fuzzy warm feelings?
How about because people buying their hardware would like it to work? They do actively support their GPUs, just not nearly with enough functionality outside of the proprietary driver. Documentation, to level that AMD offers, and the ability to accasionally get a straight answer or two from engineers, would be enough.

I actually like that they don't waste to much time on linux and focus on where the main use of their GPU's are located:

Gaming on windows.
Millions of Tegras just cried. Nvidia makes more money from desktop and notebook devices running Windows, but Android alone is a pretty big market.

Blender. Fully functional and free while 3dsmax is 3,500 USD. Wonder which one will become the starting point for new 3D artists. It's true that the current professional software is better but the gap is smaller every year like right now you dont need Windows for your everyday's software.

Heh, free, fully functional, and fully suck is what you mean.

What travesties have they been committing with the Tegras?

How is that different from Samsung, TI, etc not releasing anything but binaries?

My experience with open source drivers is they are perpetually broken. Someone writes a driver to a working-enough-for-them state and then moves on to something more exciting.
Then bugs sit and live on for 5 years because nobody wants to fix them. Especially when the hardware is changing every 6 months.
I can guarantee no developers are going to go back and optimize the drivers so you can get a higher score on glxgears.
