Yeah Queensryche is metal. One of my favs. They got popular partly because of Head Banger's Ball.
Only metal I like is from the 80's, and none of the Slayer type stuff. I can't stand any of the Nu Metal, Rap Metal, or whatever it'd be classified as, bands that have come out in the past several years. I've never understood why they even bother to write lyrics when you can't understand a fvckin word they're singing. I'd rather listen to Norah Jones.

BTW, I'm lookin for Head Banger's Ball DVDR's. Anyone got any? I used to watch almost every week.

RE: Korn being metal

You're not going to find many people much more metal than me. Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Children of Bodom, King Diamond, Rhapsody, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Hammerfall are some of my favorite bands ever. But I give props to Korn. I think they have a good metal feel to their stuff, very heavy, very distorted, very dark, and they sound completely original. Original, I say? Yes, original, because they were playing the "nu-metal" stuff in 1995, at least 5 years before the term "nu-metal" was ever even coined. So I give them the respect that they deserve.

Well, I consider all of their songs to be good ... so the answer is not just yes, but rather a lot.

Here are a few examples from a few of the bands mentioned above.
Many of the bands do offer clips, and some full length samples on their webpages.

For the Bands that cross the boundries too much to be considered one style category: I list
Opeth *.* (from what I can tell, they seem incapable of writing a bad song. Some of my very favorites are Black Rose Immortal, A Fair Judgement, Harvest, Deliverance, Bleax, The Drapery Falls, The Funeral Portrait, Patterns in the Ivy, Blackwater Park, Advent, To Bid You Farewell, Forest of October, Windowpane, and Death Whispered a Lullaby )
The Gathering - They started off as a death metal band (with the release of always) now they are not even metal anymore, but still a good rock band with an awesome singer.

For the grind & death sytle...
Death - Scream Bloody Gore (well, anything by Death, as they were the first technical death band I got into, back in the mid 90s)
Bloodbath - The Soul Collector, Bathe in Blood, So You Die, and Ways to the Grave (Grind)
Isacaarum - c**shot combat, Teenage c**t powerplay, Anal Razzia, Isamahaparinibbanasuttam, Arts of farts, and G Spot Seppuka (note, some of the titles were sensored as not to offend, Grind)
Deflorace - Dungeon full of suffer, Happy Man, It was Vaclav Mrazek, and The Best of (Grind)
Ciribus - Fat Bitches, Vomulence, and Soil Bleeds Back (Grind)
Disastrus Murmur - Land Shark and Are You Dead (death)
Divine Empire - Hidden Hatred

Melodic Death Style...
At The Gates - Anything and Everything by them ... They pretty much created the genre
In Flames - Episode 666,
Dark Tranquility - The Same
Children of Bodom - Needed, and Hate Crew Deathroll

For Black Metal...
Abigor - Repulsor, Battlestar Abigor, Galaxies and gone Decline, Abysmal Scorn, Midwinters Obliteration and Satans Galaxy (best described as harmonic black metal)
Einherjer - Far Far North, Satyricon - Mother North and Dark Medieval Times (Best described as Melodic Black "Viking" metal)
Finntroll - vindfard manniskopesten (best described as Melodic Folk Black Metal)
Arafel - On the Dark Way (melodic Black, slight folk influence)

Power Metal ...
Nightwish - Anything and everything by nightwish kicks serious ass, however, to appreciate it, you have to like Tarja's opera style singing
Helloween - Eagle Fly Free, Keeper of the Seven Keys, Dr Stein, Future World, and Halloween
Hammerfall - In Memoriam, Crimson Thunder, and The Unforgiving Blade

Doom Metal
Saturnus - They are masters of this genre, calm, slow, relaxing, and some of the most depressing sounding stuff I have ever Heard. Examples (For your Demons, thou art Free, Drown my Sorrow, Empty Handed, Lost my Way, and Thus my Heart Weepeth for thee)
Novembers Doom - Amazing Doom metal band from chicago, Their first release (Amid its Hallowed Mirth is kinda boring to me, but everything since then has been great. The Knowing is my favorite cd of theirs. Example tracks(Awaken, Harmony Divine, Shadows of Light, Silent Tomorrow, In Faith, Searching for the Betrayal, Last God, In Memmories Past, The Day I return, and Aura Blue)

For the cheasiest old school Heavy metal (that still sounds good IMO)...
check out Manowar

EDIT: I think i'm starting to get pretty proficient with a Dvorak Keyboard finally (after over 1 year of messing with them from time to time)

Hint for fans of Manowar: Majesty.
Very much the same style, you can tell Manowar has been a huge influence on them in a second.

I prefer Metal 1990 and up, mostly because a lot of that other sh*t like Manowar sounds terribly recorded.

System of a down
Korn
Distrubed
Coal Chamber
sometimes Life of Agony
Deftones
Tool / Perfect Circle
etc mostly mainstream numetal
anyone else listen to these bands especially Coal Chamber and SOAD feel free to recommened some others always listening for new bands

and a quick online music rant > what idiocy prompts these bands to put 60 or 90 seconds clips of songs instead of the whole thing? Makes no sense you're only showcasing a couple of your songs why not let potential customers/fan have a good listen? Unless you only release 6 or 7 songs on your album then putting 1 or 2 full songs free to download shouldn't be a problem.

I like one or two Korn songs, but the style/genre typically doesn't do anything for me. That being said I have respect for Korn for reasons you stated plus they boot-strapped their way to sucess. When they first started out they got no little/no air time (on Mtv or radio) but they toured their @sses off and built up a loyal fan base by loggin' lots of miles and putting on solid shows.

Lethal

EDIT: Any band I was going to mention has been mentioned (at least once) but two bands that I want to stress are Blind Guardian (IMO the best Power Metal out there currently) and Lacuna Coil (killer band from Italy. They are what Evanesence<sp?> wants to be).

Blatant plug for a friend's band - Blistered Earth

Its in the vein of 80's thrash. Lots of Judas Priest, Megadeth, OLD Metallica, a dab of Slayer, and influence of new stuff as well. They'll be coming out with a full length CD soon. I wouldn't plug them on here if they sucked though... they are really good live, and having heard an advance copy of the CD, it is AWESOME. Their lead guitarist used to have some stuff out on mp3.com under the moniker of Vomitron (did a kickass cover of Contra, you know, the video game music) and they are friends with the guys in Shadow's Fall too. Check em out, if you like the above bands its worth a listen. The clips they got up there are OLD (and not as good, IMO)... they should have the new kickass stuff up shortly.

Support local metal! Don't let all the good metal come from overseas...

I'm not sure if this is quite what you're looking for, but AFI is good and dark.
The Art of Drowning and Black Sails in the Sunset are probably their two best
albums for what you're looking for.

Wow, someone who knows the band I stole my username from

Opeth, My Dying Bride, Within Temptation, Epica, Autumn, Sentenced, those are currently my favorites. It used to be Skyclad, until I hit a new bottom in my state of depression, and could no longer listen to it without just about giving up life. (And for those who don't know the band: They don't sing about suicide or stuff like that, but they address all the wrongs in this world, from racism to abuse to destruction of nature)

Nightwish rocks hard too, still got to see them live someday (missed all opportunities so far ), Lacuna Coil I saw live when they were the opening act for a Skyclad concert, just before breaking through themselves. Tiny little Italian guys, I was over a head taller Very friendly though.

What would you guys recommend for a guy who likes Metallica? I'm kind of new to metal, but I dig most of Metallica's stuff and I've been getting into System of a Down lately. I really like that slow, heavy, churning type metal (not sure if that has a particular name to it or not) with lots of bass. So what would you guys suggest to fit that bill?

I'm open to suggestions as long as its not death metal or satanic

Wake: try checking out In Flames (Jester Script Transfigured, Clayman, Episode 666), Soilwork (As We Speak), Shadows Fall (Thoughts Without Words, Destroyer of Senses), Zao (To Think of You is to Treasure an Absent Memory, Ravage Ritual, Alive is Dead, Autopsy), Meshuggah (New Millennium Cyanide Christ, Sane), Arch Enemy (We Will Rise, Silent Wars, Ravenous, First Deadly Sin), Pantera (Becoming, Walk)

Same for you Arkitech. If you're anti-Satanic, Zao, Tourniquet, Spitfire, Extol are all Christian bands. Extol is as death metal as they come though. Tourniquet is probably the most accessible of them all, especially if you like old-school metal. Listen to "Somnambulism," "Tomb of Gilgamesh," "Erratic Palpitations of the Human Spirit," "Tears of Korah." They also have some really good acoustic songs, such as "If I Were There," "Twilight," "If Pigs Could Fly," and "When the Love is Right"

You might also like Iced Earth, which is old-school metal, very much like early Metallica or Iron Maiden. I recommend the entire "Something Wicked This Way Comes" album, or better yet, their Alive in Athens album.
