Good NIC?

what is a good recommended nic? a NiC that will not lagg, freeze entire comp when in use, and will freeze.

I have personally had very good experiences with Intel NICs. You can usually find an etherfast 10/100 just about anywhere, and they are cheap. They also *don't* load extra systray utils like 3com NIC.

Others have found Linksys NICs to be excellent, and I have had good experiences with them also. DLink is good too, apparently. Realtek NICs are cheap [a little flaky?].

Personally? Intel or Linksys.

I've used several DLink NICs with no troubles. Linksys is supposed to be excellent too (and inexpensive to boot).

While 3Com and Intel nic's are good, you really don't have to pay $50 for a good nic. Linksys makes a solid nic, and at $20 a pop, you can't go wrong. I have two, one of them is several years old. Like I said, rock solid. Avoid any nic with a realtek chip like the plague.

The big 3: 3com, Intel, Netgear

3com = slightly slower, lower CPU util
Intel = Slighty quicker, higher cpu util
Not sure of netgear, but they are very good

The Intel pro100+ adapters are very cheap (check eB@y...)
I have the pro100+ management's, and they are ultra fast + ultra stable.
No flakyness at all.

My old work place all I used was 3com cards. 150 machines all 3com for 2 years not a single problem with a single card.

How about the D-Link DFE530TX 10/100 PCI? Someone is selling them for CAD$15 around here (US$10).

Hmmm... and what about the DFE-538TX PCI? Onvia.com/canada is selling them for CAD$22 but with free shipping. Not that I'd ever use it, but it has Wake on LAN in addition to the 530's features, and I can't figure out why it's $8 less than the plain 530.

Personally, I like 3com, I have never had any kind of a problem with any of them, I own about 8 of them I think now. Also, I have used Intel 10/100s that were nice also. But the 3coms are the ones I swear by.

I've used 3Com and Linksys and both were giving me problems with freezing and interrupted transfers, particularly with NetBIOS. Now I'm using a Netgear FA310TX and I looove it. Not a single problem in about 9 months (the system's been powered ever since I installed it.)

Not that I have a lot of experience, but here's another vote for the netgear fa310tx. I use three on our home network. ~$20, installation was a snap, and they are the one bit of hardware that never gives me any trouble. They just work.

Just personal experience..

3Com 3C905C works best when doing server, files, communicating w/ other PC, kind of slow for DSL connection.

Netgear FA310TX , very easy to install, data/file transfer not as responsive as 3Com, but extremely stable. (but if other PC also using Netgear NIC, it is actually very fast)

Linksys NC100, cheap, the FASTEST flow speed for dynamic IP DSL, but, it seems need couple clicks to see my other PC.
