Good place to buy OEM CPUs?

Searching Google hasn't been very fruitful with this, and all forum threads on the topic seemed to be at least a couple years old.

I know that TigerDirect carries a few OEM CPUs, but most of the more recent CPUs are Out of Stock. Any others? Hopefully one that is offering pre-orders on the 4790K...?

If your in the US and close to a microcenter they have the box version for pre-order in store pickup only for a reasonable price.

You could look at shopblt.com if you want to pre-order one. Not sure when they will be available tho.

The box version shows a ETA of 7-3. No ETA shown for the tray version but I think I've read the tray version will come 1st.

I would lean towards the boxed for the warranty if it was me.

OEM CPU buying ain't what it used to be. You used to be able to save a few dollars buying one. It seems that Intel and AMD have both cracked down on people selling chips out of the tray. Now, when I find one for sale, it is often as expensive as the retail equivalent.

If you must find someone selling an OEM part, the thing I usually do is look up the SKU someplace like cpu-world.com and then Google search it. That's how I found one shop selling the a8-7600 (though whether or not they had any stock is anyone's guess).

Its silly to buy an OEM CPU vs a boxed one. Also the warranty is something you would have to work out with the place you buy it. And Intel wont help you in any warranty cases.

Unscrupulous businesspeople were prone to fake packaging and resell slower CPUs as faster CPUs for a profit. Restricting OEM CPU sales was one of the ways Intel and AMD cracked down on it. Buy retail, and have a spare chunk of aluminum around.

There are often SKUs that can't be had in retail packaging, like the A8-7600 or the old B-class processors from the K10.5 days. I agree that anything with a retail SKU should be bought retail thesedays. You gain nothing buying from the rare vendor selling tray processors.

You might want to keep the blanket value judgements to yourself; there are CPUs that builders like me might find desirable, such as the i7-4785T, that are only available from a tray.

There was another site somewhere that claimed to have stock, only to put people on an interminable waiting list.

So its still unavalible almost 6 months after its paperlaunch.

Seems so. People might have gotten a few chips out of SabrePC from Feb-Apr of this year, but I haven't actually spoken to anyone who actually ordered one and got a unit in-hand.

One vendor doesn't make for much of a source, even if they do ship a few parts to customers.

OK, all context reprinted. I still don't see anything "silly" about wanting to buy a tray CPU that is otherwise unavailable. "Risky" is perhaps a term we could both live with. For my part, I have very rarely seen a defective CPU, they only break when abused or a PSU fails catastrophically. So the risk as I perceive it is low.

OK, I see maybe a small linguistic problem. If you are actually saying "Its silly to buy an OEM CPU vs if the same model is available as a boxed one," then I suppose we actually agree.
