Dune 2000 was a horrible remake of the grandfather of the RTS industry. I didnt enjoy it at all.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and the Winter Assault Expansion Pack was worthy of its Game of the Year award and can be picked up for a reasonable price.

Out of all the suggestions, I cannot believe that no-one mentioned the Homeworld Series. Great graphics, strong story and innovative, yet simplistic gameplay made Homeworld one of the greatest games in my RTS collection.

Best RTS in a long time, that brought something new to the genre.

Dune 2 on the Sega Megadrive was the best version.

If you like Star Trek, you could try Star Trek: Armada or Star Trek: Armada 2. Never played homeworld, was too engrossed in my studies & other games.
Warzone 2100 was great in its day.

You should check out the original homeworld - great story and gameplay albeit the graphics are slightly dated.

Obviously you didnt play Dune 2 on the Amiga Even back then Consoles didnt stack up to a real computer

Star Trek Armarda was quite a fun game but not widely accepted. It was quite diverse and interesting but lacked a certain spark that makes a game memorable for being great.

The reason I didn't play it on the Amiga is..... I had (and still have I might add) an Atari ST 1024 and a Commodore 64 . Star Trek: Armada 2 is a bit better, definitely better than Warcaft 3... but then almost everything is imo.

Here's another good RTS I found while rummaging... Command & Conquer: Generals (expansion Zero Hour).

And it's even better with the Thrones & Patriots expansion pack.

I?m soooo disappointed that Big Huge went and killed this game off by taking a different route with it in the form of RoN:Rise of Legends.

Most of the RTS' mentioned here are pretty good, WH40k for example, and SC is a classic... And a few others. But to be honest, I just keep coming back to Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour. Single player is kind of useless, but skirmish and multiplayer is damn fun. I've been playing it for years and I'm still convinced it's the best RTS for it's target audience (like BF2 but RTS). Act of War was pretty cool too because it was more realistic (physics/graphics wise atleast) but apart from the US team the others felt unbalanced and awkward to play I thought. You could tell that the devs had a good idea but weren't exactly experienced... Or just screwed up a bit. That's how I felt.

Anyway, CCG ZERO HOUR!!!

I enjoyed Warcraft 1 & 2, Starcraft, and I really got into Warcraft 3 & it's expansion when it came out (from a mulitplayer standpoint). I played WC3 for a couple of years before I put it down....I would still be playing it if it wasn't for World of Warcraft. I purchased Command and Conquer generals, but I returned it.....Not because it wasn't a good game...I think it was the fact that I had put so much time into WC3s, hotkeys, commands, the strategies, etc. It was really hard to play both at the same time for me. I felt awkword that is all....I went from 120-140 actions per minute to like 10 It looked nice but I just wasn't ready to quit playing WC3 i guess.
