any recomendations .... under $50.00 a bottle?

There's a 12yr single malt called Tomatin for ~$20/750mL. Nice woody single malt without overbearing overtones - my staple drink at a decent price. Cutty really kinda blows, man - tastes too much like medicine which is a tell-tale of a half-ass scotch. If you're going to get a blend, spend another $2 and get J. Walker red. That's OK for the price.

Johnnie Walker Black Label is a very good scotch for the price but I have to admit that I have never tried the red or blue label's. Anyone care to comment on the differences?

Think of any hint of taste in that scotch that you think might make it unpleasant/sting. Red has slightly more of it than black and gold, slightly less of it than black. Aging (or filtering depending on the type) takes the 'bite' out of liquors. I can't comment on JW Blue because my income doesn't qualify to drink it.

Not at all. Those are the ones that I have had the enjoyed when I have gotten the chance to indulge (which isn't very often). So STFU. I got to try the blue and green at one. function 5 years ago.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. Red had more bite than Black has more bite than Gold than (probably) has more bite than the others. To be honest, I like to drink Johnny Red but would drink Black or Gold (or Blue or Green, Doghouse ) if I had the budget for it. There are certainly finer brands out there, but one has to balance one's own price-point with their own preferences in taste.

Personally, I like a simple smokey/earthy flavor that comes from some single malts. I don't really like the potpourri of flavors in fine blends like Chivas - too much flavor mingling for my taste. That's the fun of scotch (and wines, cheeses, and other fine consumables). Experiment and find what you like/dislike and why you like/dislike them.
