The F-14 radar is very advanced. Russia would have loved to have gotten their hands on that.

Phoenix missiles, if Iran had any left could have been part of the deal as well.

Only problem was that when we sold them the A/C they came as the US Export model..
No confidential or above systems including the AIM-54 or APG65 were sold with the A/C
this is common practice when we sell off surplus AC
they dont get what we are flyign they get a version that is stripped down.

in other words we dont give away anything that could hurt us later...

our 14s were always superior to what we sold.. same goes for all US airframes that are exported to other countries.

US Navy AT2 here.. Worked on A-7Es F/A-18 A,B,C,Ds and S-3Bs
10 years of service 87-97

I've never heard of this before. How sure are you of this? No other country was given the F-14.

The U.S sold Iran any weapon system they wanted with all options. This included the Phoenix missile system for the F14s.

The U.S today strips down sales of jets to Israel's neighbors, but that was not the case when they were selling weapons to Iran.

Iran was supposed to be the Israel of today. It was primarily a counter measure against the Soviets. The U.S was arming Iran and making them their closest ally so they could counter a Soviet invasion into the area. Plus Iran was supposed to have the 3rd largest air force and it would have been great against the Soviets.

The F-16s Israel has were meant for Iran. If you strip down the paint I'm sure you'll find old Iranian paint on it.
Export A/C and other weapon systems have reduced capabilities with respect the frontline US weapons.

Some countries have developed the capability to make modifications to enhance weapon systems; however lack of training will also be a handicap for those that use them sparingly. Dogfighting amoung yourself does nto work very well; same old tactics are repeated.

Eaglekeeper,

Did you fly an F-15? For Israel?

If so, are the days of dogfighting over? These days you just lock from 50+ miles away and fire a missile, correct?

The days of dogfighting are largely over with the advent of the modern 3-dimensional battlespace and computer aided models of how to operate qualitatively within the total spatial volume. Its more about being aware of that space and taking care of the threats in a timely and appropriate manner, but not always the quickest and dirtiest way. Dogfighting is not an efficient use of resources when you think about it, more of an obsolete yet romantic contest of willpower. To charge headon into battle with something modern like an F-22 makes that $100 million flying machine look like it is disposable.

50 miles is an awful long shot, especially if the target has any low observable characteristics like all current and future American fighters. But you got the right idea. They are still a few years away from practical missiles that have liquid fuel motors to sustain that kind of energy for use against a manuevering target. Today's missiles climb through an arcing trajectory towards their target and largely glide from the apex of their flight, which means they are losing energy from the point of burnout all the way to impact. It takes more than a little energy to steer the missile, and gobs of excess energy if the missile has to steer at something that is trying to avoid it..
