The aircraft is impressive, but the film was just another weinerfest cruise flick.

My brother was stationed at Adak Alaska in the mid to late 80s as an AG (weatherman). He told many stories about calling out weather patterns to the Tomcat pilots after they had taken off from there to intercept Russian bombers.

He said they were a site to behold when they lifted off and went straight up and were gone from site in a few seconds.

One of the reasons the F-14 was such a successful design is that they designed the weapons system (both missle and radar) first, then came up with a plane that could exploit the weapons system to its fullest. Today's desire for stealth and multi-mission capability give first priority to the aircraft design.

I'll tell you, one of the most exciting moments of my life was when we were operating in the Russian's backyard (for reference, in the area off the Aleutian Islands) with 3 complete Carrier Battle Groups and all the support vessels and even a couple Coast Guard cutters thrown in for good measure. Wow. It was a Site to behold. The Russians were sending up Backfire and Bear bombers and we were on 5 minute alert, with these HUGE seas, even the carriers pitching and rolling (those Destroyer guys, OMG help them). The Air Boss would yell, "Launch the Alert 5 fighters, launch the alert 5 fighters! over the PA. We were struggling like hell to get the birds to the cat, the nose wheels sliding sideways, guys with chains walking along side ready to lash them down if necessary. We'd get 'em there and they'd take off and intercept the bombers and "escort" away from the battle group. They'd fly in shifts and upon recovery we were regaled with stories of certain hand signals being traded between flight crews. We did have a Bear fly about a couple hundred feet over the deck one night (it seemed like you could almost reach up and touch it as it lumbered over) with the bay doors open! I guess one got through. heh. I'm sure the Russians found the operation provocative, to say the least. The 3 groups operated at a distance of course but they did a photo op of all the vessels under way in formation. I've been trying to locate that damned picture, a copy of which I received with a sailor of the month award. heh. If I can find it I'll post it.
Anyway. There ya have it.

There were a few Russians that use to come down past the Atlantic coast.

I have talked to a few F15-B crewmen that used to play escort.

No he was in 84 to 90 I think. 3 years on Adak, and 3 years at Moffit Air Station. I also have a good friend who was an AG from 91 to 95. He was on the Tripoli.

Partyka. He partyed too much in A School and got low scores. Thats why he got stuck on a gator freighter

Thats right. The radar and missiles were first designed to build into a navalized F-111. The radar and missiles worked perfectly, the F-111 didn't do so well. So they kept the parts that worked, threw away the F-111 based airframe, and built a brand new airframe from the ground up.

Isreal has long been a supporter of the Iranians when it comes to keeping the F-14 flying. They circumvented military export agreements between themselves and the U.S. by putting in somewhat vagued clauses in the contracts during the 1980's. Most of this has been shut down, but it wasn't until the first Bush that they cracked down on this program. The U.S. was a different animal back then and was glad to assume the odd position of supporting both sides of the Iran-Iraq disputes.

I have never heard anything linking Lyulka (nor Saturn and Perm Aviadvigatel for that matter...) to the Iranian F-14's engines. Is it hearsay or is their proof?

I see some definite similarities between the Su-27 and the F-14. The widely spaced power plants, mechanically variable exhaust, the vertical stabs, the swept up cockpit. The only thing it didn't have a was a variable wing?

Phoenix missiles, if Iran had any left could have been part of the deal as well.

Only problem was that when we sold them the A/C they came as the US Export model..
No confidential or above systems including the AIM-54 or APG65 were sold with the A/C
this is common practice when we sell off surplus AC
they dont get what we are flyign they get a version that is stripped down.

in other words we dont give away anything that could hurt us later...

our 14s were always superior to what we sold.. same goes for all US airframes that are exported to other countries.

I've never heard of this before. How sure are you of this? No other country was given the F-14.

The U.S sold Iran any weapon system they wanted with all options. This included the Phoenix missile system for the F14s.

The U.S today strips down sales of jets to Israel's neighbors, but that was not the case when they were selling weapons to Iran.

Iran was supposed to be the Israel of today. It was primarily a counter measure against the Soviets. The U.S was arming Iran and making them their closest ally so they could counter a Soviet invasion into the area. Plus Iran was supposed to have the 3rd largest air force and it would have been great against the Soviets.

The F-16s Israel has were meant for Iran. If you strip down the paint I'm sure you'll find old Iranian paint on it.
