Oh no doubt. Series S performance would be nice but even that's a stretch. Still, it should be a big improvement.

Haha, just in time for the 2024 holiday season?

Nintendo just stated the Switch has hit the halfway point of its life, so I think that my math is right...

(I really want a Series S equivalent Nintendo console. I would pay $400 for non portable version right now that can also play all current titles. Take my money, Nintendo.)

Nvidia doesn't have an announced SoC that would be suitable for jack.

The only thing they have is an old (newer than the ancient current version, but old) SoC that is using their custom ARM cores from several years ago.

A Switch Pro that is the size of the larger version now but comes with a gorgeous OLED, OK. Maybe even some increased clockspeeds when docked from the current hardware? I mean, the CPU alone is severely underclocked so perhaps they feel like we can get some juice there, which would likely help smooth some struggling framerates in current games with minimal invasiveness and risk.

But Nintendo getting a brand new, unannounced custom SoC that has DLSS support (ie, enough tensor cores to make it happen) in a portable when the latest nVidia uArch has undesirable efficiency? And Nintendo jumping on a expensive near leading edge node that has notable power usage issues during a global silicon shortage is both risky and out of character.

On top of that, somehow this new SoC has perfect backwards compatibility to so you aren't wiping out the Switch catalog and games can be sold for both the Switch and Switch Pro.

This sounds more and more like a fanboys wet dream posted to a forum than anything resembling reality to me.

You don't think shrinking the SOC on Samsung 8nm would offer them enough power savings vs the current 16nm one to put out a major upgrade? I'd imagine cooling is the reason they cut the clockspeed in half vs what it was on the Nvidia Shield, otherwise they probably wouldn't leave the chip knee-capped when docked if it was just to preserve battery life.

Ugh, does the end of the game run like crap or something? I only played a few hours of it but the performance seemed pretty good there.

Well it's pretty solid, but then I went and played Spiderman on the PS5. Sigh. Going back it's, comparatively, a low rez mess and when you are really in thick of the massive battles (which are pure platinum crazy) I feel like it is just not satisfying compared to how it could be.

It has some epic vistas but the level design and encounters seem curtailed for the platform.

I think shrinking the *current* SoC to 8nm would be an amazing step forward, but didn't we already get one shrink and faster/lower power memory with the Lite refresh? I mean, another iteration of that would be great - and yeah doing something crazy like clocking the CPU back to spec or going completely insane for Nintendo doing that and doubling the functional units on the GPU would nearly double the performance of the platform. That would be a huge shot in the arm!

Yeah, my memory isn't that terrible.

It doesn't bring 4k OR DLSS though. It might bring some much more stable 1080p30 frame rates to all titles and maybe even some 60fps upgrades.

Who am I kidding? If the current CPU is a potato, and the doubling of clock speeds makes it a 2x Turbo Potato from 2015, I am still going to buy it.

Wouldn't surprise me if in two or three years you'll be able to play it 1440p60 on a half decent PC with the speed Switch emulation is progressing. Wii U emulation has gotten so good the last four years you can play Breath of the Wild at 120 fps and Switch emulation seems to be progressing even faster than Wii U emulation was.

I saw that Nintendo's Game Builder Garage comes out on Friday. From a preview piece on ArsTechnica, it seems sort of like a simplified programming tool using graphical elements. It almost looks like a cutesy version of LabView! I'm tempted to check it out for fun to see how potent it is.

It does look neat I just have no creativity for it. I never even made a level in SMM2.

Only game I have preordered for the Switch currently is Mario Golf so I have that to look forward to in a couple weeks. I'm thinking I'll have finished Ratchet and Clank by the time it comes out.

Well, at least I can say that I think a Mario level requires a bit more creativity than actual programming. While Game Builder Garage looks all cutesy and GUI-based like Mario Maker, it's technically more of a GUI-based programming language complete with boolean operators and such. The big thing for me is that it would be just a fun little diversion as if I want to program a game, I'll just use an actual programming language. (The Ars article noted how you are limited on the number of nodes that you can have.)

Several years late, I'm playing Luigi's Mansion 3- liking it so far, but I'm up to the 9th floor and the novelty is starting to wear off a little. Hunting for money and gems feels a little aimless when there's nothing to do with them.

I haven't played a Luigi's Mansion since part 1 on GC, but that was the problem with it back then. It just got old pretty quickly.

Played with my 9 yo son and it was a hoot. I think couch coop is a huge draw of the Switch game. I have to admit the GC version was also a game I finished like 17 years ago, ha.

Mario Golf Super Rush looks awesome too. Will definitely pick this up in a couple of weeks. Mario Golf and Mario Tennis games are always awesome.

Something about Metroid 5 looked off to me. Like the animations and art style just didn't groove well. It looks like it was developed by someone else other than Nintendo.

I've had Mario Golf preordered for a bit now. Getting that at launch.

It's probably Mercurysteam again, they made the last Metroid game on 3DS. Looks a lot like their style.

(Very hyped for that game!)

Tried so many times to get into BOTW, I think 3 times and it didn't do much for me. I guess nothing like what I was used to and I'm coming from where I really enjoyed the N64 version of Zelda and Majora's mask, etc.

Glad to finally see some gameplay from BOTW2, very excited to see it takes place in the clouds so you'll have more flying and further exploration of highpoints.

And man, that little handheld Zelda 1+2 plus the original Link's Awakening is tempting, I might have to get that. Love both of those NES games and never played the original Link's Awakening on Game Boy.
