But i also like MSN 7.0...the overprotective file send function is it's only downfall.

It's all about how well it penetrates the market. AIM is not a good client but it works because everyone uses it.

Google executives say they plan to unveil on Wednesday a "communications tool" that is potentially a clear step beyond the company's search-related business focus.

While executives would not disclose what the new software tool might be, Google has long been expected to introduce an instant messaging service to compete with services offered by America Online, Yahoo and MSN from Microsoft.

Two more days!!!

From the article:

A Google-branded smart phone has long been a pet project of Mr. Page, and earlier this year Google invested $2 million in a project by Nicholas Negroponte, founder of the M.I.T. Media Laboratory, to develop a $100 wireless laptop. The smart-phone idea, which the company has not talked about publicly, would be a way to extend Google's reach and give it a more extensive connection with its users by offering Google on a multipurpose mobile device.

Rofl! That reads funny...$2 mil invested to make a $100 wireless laptop.

Well $2 mil is abou the price of 1000 regular laptops, maybe 2000. Many thousands of $100 laptops could be of use in developing countries.

AOL's next software (messaging and others) looks to be a huge improvement in ease of use. Do a search for AIM triton. I'm using Trillian now, but yahoo's messenger is also pretty nice.

Who cares. It's not like they will advertise your personal life. Unless you're discussing terrorist, pedophilic, or any other accounts of extremely disturbing activities, you don't have much to worry about.

While I think its important to not give up all privacy, I think that the fact that a computer can see the word "lawnmower" on the page and change ads accordingly is a pretty non-intrusive price to pay for free email...

You seem to forget the little bit of news about AOL claiming to own all of your AIM conversations and to use them for whatever purpose they so desire.
Wow, congrats on spreading 5 month old FUD. They changed the TOS to make it more explicit that they don't do that. Link

it's even on snopes...

Wow. They did not say they are paying $2M to buy $100 wireless laptops. Research and Development takes time and money. Do you think it cost $100 to develop a P4 processor?

ostif.org
appearently all of you aim users claiming no pop ups just dont use updated versions of aim.

because now it runs steaming video ads whenever it pleases, with audio, and when you hover over the ad, including the horrible viewpoint media player buttons, it pops up a relevant ad.

Its twice as annoying as a popup.

GAIM is the best program out there.

I think google is coming up with a new IM network though, not just a client that connects to existing MS/AOL/ICQ/whatever networks.
