Mine doesn't get very hot to my hands when I am playing UT2003. I always use it on a flat surface, btw. I haven't tried it on my lap, yet. I'll get back to you on this. I always use an optical mouse playing this game, btw, so I only use the arrow keys near the end of the keyboard.

I also have an 8600 and am really liking it. But I wish that IBM had come out with their R50p before I bought the 8600.

I have no heat issues with my 8600 (it has NVidia 5650, 1.7GHz, 7K60 HD, 1G RAM). Does yours have the Radeon 9600? I've heard that there are some heat issues with that setup.

I have the 8600 with the Radeon 9600. I've read in the Dell forums that several 8600's with the Radeon 9600's are having problems. Mine isn't having the problems and several other Dell forums members aren't having any problems either. I guess this is not a really widespread problem.

actually, i just found out that my bed's cover sheet was in fact blocking the air passage which didn't allow the notebook to cool properly.

i just bought 512 MB of ram for it and it flys now.
great great laptop

I originally bought mine with 256MB RAM and upgraded my laptop to 768MB last week. Dell RAM upgrades are too expensive.

My 8600 with a 1.7 has 512mb of ram (2 sticks) and I'm thinking of upgrading to more ram. Problem is, I feel it's a waste to just go to 768 while losing a stick. But in the beginning, to go with 1 stick of 512 just cost too much.

For any 8600 users out there with 768mb of ram, does the extra 256 make any difference?

Yes, I have 768 megs of ram and it does make a difference. I use newsbin and that thing spools a lot of newsgroups. The text files can become very large and require a lot more than 512 MB of ram. Otherwise, virtual memory has to be increased, resulting in slower memory access.

I say, go for it. You can go for 1 GIG if you'd like, but I think 768 is fine.
