This is looking better and better. No 8XAGP sucks and so does the lack of GbE...but other than that....ECC PC2100 is dirt cheap, compared to ECC PC3200.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Can someone tell me more about the OCing on this board? It's got no AGP/PCI lock...how's that work? I don't go for running PCI devices out of spec. Bad things happen.

Just cause I have an intrest in this thread, especially since it seems to be covering both AXP and Opterons, I will bump it.

Don't worry AGP 4X vs 8X performance difference is negligible, show HERE.
(Even AGP 8X vs PCI Express 16X)

PATA vs SATA too.

So you can save $$$ for next upgrade.

well, extrapolating from this:
link
your gaming performance should be slightly better with the opteron 1.8 than your current setup.

A lot of money for a dual opteron. A dual mobile athlon is way cheaper but you can only use ddr266 memory on such a system.

Keep in mind that having a Dual will only offer a benefit for those few games that are made for multithreading.

Any dual AXP Mobile comparos to dual opterons? Since if I go dual, I would likely eithe get mobile AXP's and overclock them, or cheaper opterons, like the 242 series. SO the opterons would be at a big clock disadvantage, but have onboard dual channel memory and quite a bit more cache.

Thanks guys!

I am still very interested in a dual-Opteron rig. Though I'm about a month out from buying, it will only benefit me as prices will drop slightly. Hopefully.

Also a dual 244 or 246 rig will last a long time. No upgrades needed for quite sometime. A God-Box, if you will.

That it would, which is why I am unsure if getting the lower speed opterons would be a very good idea for me. If I go the opteron route, maybe it would be better to go with just one 244 or 246 for a while, then the other later. Thats what I was planning to do even with the lower speed opterons, but with those I would only have to wait a few months, to get the higher speeds it could be several months if not a year.

Thanks for the review Mloot

One more thing, it its covered in the review forgive me as I just started reading, but wanted to get the post up. How much of a disadvantage is the single double wide memory channel of say the MSI K8T master to the dual double wide channels of the much more expensive boards. And what exactly takes advantage of this? I mean it doesn't really matter how big a disadvantage it is if the only thing that takes advantage of it is like crazy high requests from other users. SInce stuff like that wouldn't apply to me, this rig would be used as a normal rig, with heavy multitasking, not really as much as a server.

Just thought of another question, regardless what platform I choose, would my Antec SX1030B case be sufficient to house this type of system? I know some of hte boards are extended ATX form factor, and not sure what case they will fit it. I can assume though that my current power supply will likely not cut the mustard for a dual rig, so that would need an upgrade.

Here's a review that pits the MSI board (with its shared memory banks) against the larger, and more expensive, Tyan board with its separate memory banks.

EDIT: As for your case, according to what information I could google, your case only fits ATX motherboards. It looks like if you were to buy an EATX mobo, you would have to get a larger case.

Cool thanks, just got finised with the sudhian review, good stuff there. The bartons generally got trounced. Now I am sure I will have to look a bit harder, likely into user reviews, but what i would really like to see is a comparison of say opteron 242's(240's or 244's would be nice too) to Mobile Bartons at like 2400-2500Mhz.

Oh yeah, any idea when the 90nm opterons will start showing up? Lateest roadmap says second half 04, but that could mean any time between now and december, thats a long timeframe.

Hmm, the opterons may be looking a bit better to me at least, I found a used retail 244 for 205 shipped. That would work for a bit till maybe christmas when I can hopefully afford another.
