GPU Failure?

Hey guys,

I built my first PC about fourteen months ago, and it's been working well since then -- until recently. Recently, when I reboot or start up the computer, the computer will sometimes not send a signal to my monitor. I get a single POST beep on boot, which supposedly indicates no problems, and because I'm the only user of this computer and I didn't bother passwording it, it loads windows directly and I can hear the Windows logon sound. Nowhere in the process do I get any signs of video signal life.

I've tested with three different DVI monitors, and get the same results. My video card (a GeForce 7950GT by EVGA) only has DVI outputs, and neither one produces a video signal. Has anyone had this sort of problem before, or can anyone suggest further troubleshooting steps?

Some hardware specifics:

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P965-DS3
GPU: EVGA GeForce 7950GT
Monitors: Samsung 206BW, Samsung 2053BW, ViewSonic VS10162
PSU: Enermax Liberty 500W

Thanks for reading!

Have you tried using another video card in your computer yet? That would seem like the obvious next step.

If you don't have access to another vid card, you could always go buy one from Fry's and return it if a new vid card doesn't solve your issues (though that might be morally wrong in some sense).

Or try reseating the video card. Try reseating your RAM/CPU as well.

put another video card in, if the new card works, then your current card is dead. if the new card doesn't work, then there is a motherboard issue preventing it from communicating with the card (most likely, or something more exotic)...

but it happens, things break.
If you still have warranty on your current card you can send it in. if you don't hace access to a second card, then this is what you should do, they will test it, if broken send you another card, if not, send it back to you at your expense (aka, ~6-9$ shipping each way).

Try resetting cmos in the motherboard.

If it is overclocked too hard or the pci-e freq is not good then it may not display video.

I know this may sound simplistic but make sure you DVi cable is firmly attached to your monitor and your computer.

If you have a DVI to VGA apdapter, VGA cable, and LCD with VGA input, try that. If it works, disconnect all cables from monitor including power, wait a min, plug DVI back in, see if it works.

GPU Failure?
Are you running Vista.
Have had same proplem with 88gtx + gt after installing new drivers on vista.
Over the years had 2 new MB that wouldnt have video with pci-e on xpp.
Both needed any pci card to get video on first start ups.
I started with only 1 stick of mem.
Remove and reseat the video card.
After windows starts reset the bios for pci-e first detect.
After doing that pci-e would start on any setting in bios strange.
