8800GTS (G80) 320mb, overclocked to 621/1566/945 (core/shader/memory):

4,400 points per day

Please note that I was getting around 2,500 points per day under Vista64, and my CPU usage was ~20% on one core under Vista. XP uses 100% of one of my cores.

I found an article on AT that partially explains why there is such a performance difference right now with F@H GPU2.

link

AMD's architecture is optimized for 5-way parallelism, while NVidia's isn't. Which means that the code needs to be more highly optimized in order to take advantage of the extra power available.

Wait, so you are saying that Vista's lower CPU core usage with the GPU2 client may not be an advantage, that the overall GPU2 throughput might be less as well?

I've got the same card but the default BFG overclock. I get approx 3,600 ppd on Vista 64 with a C2D.

I'll bet that changes fairly quickly, there are going to be a lot of people making noise on the boards to "equalize" points between the camps.

more importantly, there are going to be a lot more people running 4850/70 than gtx 260/80. it's funny, f@h optimized for amd when they were behind nvidia with 38x0 series, now they're doing the same thing for nvidia when amd has the advantage...odd...

Perhaps. It seems somewhat confirmed by MmmSkyscraper's results as well.

The Vista GPU2 client did seem smoother to me though. I find that with the XP client I have to turn down the CPU usage in the options in order to keep my computer responsive while browsing and stuff.

I'm still consistantly getting 4,400 points per day with this card; I'm quite happy with the performance.

interesting, just went from 2109 to 2459 ppd on my stock 3870 when going from the gpu2 beta 6 to gpu2 beta 8 client.

I don't think Ppd should be reported for GPU as a total but a average. My ppd since starting folding has varied over 1000ppd < or > what i started out as. Just depends on work unit they send you I guess.

8800GS - Went for $65 this past weekend - crazy bang4thebuck...
Stock speed was 580/1450/700 ===> 3900 PPD

Slight OC to 675/1685/800 ===> 4600 PPD

This is using 177.40. When first DLed the client I was on 175.xx. I was only getting 2900ish. Good thing I read the forums and found that beta drivers made a BIG difference.

... oh, and my card finally does something better than a 9600GT.

Yep, I got in on that deal also, have another on the way.

Will have:
EVGA 8800GS @ $80 AR (rebate being processed)
Gigabyte 8800GT 256MB @ $73 AR (rebate mailed yesterday)
EVGA 8800GS @ $73 AR (UPS to deliver Friday)

And yes, these cards give crazy ppd bang for the buck. With just the two in hand I'm cranking out >8000 ppd just on the GPU client.

Thanks :beer:Denithor:thumbsup: for this informative thread on the current GPU2 processing cards that are currently working on the F@H app.

I have been patiently awaiting Stamford's update of ATI's GPU2 core to take the plunge on those 4xxx cards that are causing havock to nVIDIA's bottom line since their month+ ago intro of those 280 & 260 cards.

My wife and i took a week off this past week - unfortunatly the cc's were using their siren voices and we (that is I) made some purchases.
.....some shorts & tops from Macy's during their 99cents only shipping charge
.....Sony XBR4 40" LCD for about $750.00 off MSRP w/no interest until Jan 2010 from Sears
.....assorted cables & a HDTV TERK antenna (don't have cable) - antenna pulled in over 30 stations over the standard 2-13 channels via the rabbit ears - Stations look really good vs the co-op's master antenna cable in our apartment. The antenna looks weird but this I consider the best purchase of the week AFTER the Sony (of course!). Very pleasantly suprized.

and, last but not least - an Evga 8800GT O/C vid card! Well, just could not wait for Stanford's ATI core upgrade and these cards are dropping in price like flies lately!

Dropped it into a Q6600 (OC to 2.8ghz) 8-gig 800 mem Vista64 OS Gigabyte 35 board housed in a Antec 900 midtower Wen. night (replaced a Gigabyte 3870 I got in March this year - don't worry, will place into a AM2 box that housing an ATI 1950 GPU1 Folding card which is no longer used since F@H has stopped sending out GPU1 workunits lately).

Well, the 8800GT didnt work with the GPU2 core until I d/l the CUDA files from nVIDIA on Thur. I also d/l'ed FAHMON to report the stats that other posters have listed on this Thread showing what their card outputs are. Unfortunatly, FAHMON keeps crashing with error #5 so I am going to have to guesstimate my ppd for this particular card.

Thursday was showing an estimate of about 3650ppd which rather perplexed me since your stats report a range of 4400 - 4800 for this card variant. Did some searches online to some o/c sites dealing with nVIDIA cards and d/l the RIVA toolkit that gives me stats on the performance of the card and o/c parameters (different from ATI's Control center but it does the job)

The graphs from RIVA was showing that the card was at the low end of it's Core clock, Shader clock and Memory clock so there was room for improvements.

I first increased the fan speed to 75%, which cooled the gpu from it's temperature of 72c (processing F@H) to the 50c zone. Didn't notice any increase in sound from this jump (hmm...maybe because of the ringing in my left ear that I have been subjected to for over a month and a half lately I can't hear it).

At this time each unit was done in 1min 30sec avg.

I raised the GPU core values from 650/1620/950 (C,S,M) to 741/1846/1025 - the first 2 values linked as I move one slider the other moves in concert.

This dropped the per unit completion time to 1min 18sec.

Looking at the Log of the GPU2 core it takes about 2hours, 12min (03 sec. from last completed work unit entry) from the start of folding to reporting back to Stanford to the starting point of the next segment.

Based on the above info and that the points for the work units completed are 480 my daily ppd is now about 5,208  (just hope my math skills are better that my hearing!)

The surprizing thing about this is that this PC box is also running 2 SMP's - One is completing a unit every 15min and the other 20min. This is 5 min more of a load than when I was NOT running the GPU2 from the ATI3870 card!!!

I tried raising the o/c on the nVIDIA card to 751 from 741 but instability occured and the PC crashed with the screen blanking out. Rebooted & set the o/c to the 741 values & has been running stable since.

My question on the O/C: Has anyone who o/c has the core & shader NOT linked - whereas only the core clock is o/c & the shader clock left alone. If so, did this result in a Higher core clock o/c and faster processing of the work units? Please let me know...

dialed oc back down...f@h works fine with a decent oc but computer gets very sad if I play games without turning f@h off...oh, well, stock is fine.

btw, I'm now getting 2625 ppd on my 3870 at stock. can anyone else verify that they're producing more points now? Has anybody heard when they'll come out with a better optimization for 4xxx gpus?

Bryan, your PPD is a bit higher than mine at stock on my 3870. I get around 2200 - 2500 +/- depending on the project. My 2900 Pro gets 1660 +/- and I overclocked the hell out of that. I am curious though on the 4850/4870 cards on what kind of results they are getting, as I plan on getting 1 in a couple of weeks.

@TurtleBlue

I know you can unlink the shader clock from the core clock to push a bit more speed there but I don't know if it will help with F@H (it might though, as the GPU client is based around shader power).

And to check your F@H ppd if FAHMON doesn't work, just go here and enter your username in the search engine. Works great and shows more stats than you probably want to see.

Thanks for the post, Denithor

I try to do the unlinking tonight (AFTER I shut down the 2 running SMP's ) and boosting the core clock on it's own and see if it will give me an extra smidgen of apple pie on my folding plate.

EVGA put up an update to their O/C util so I'll be trying that also.

I already link to those stats that are offered by Extreme, Thanks - also look at the stats at fahstats.com.

I'll see if I still have Einstein on my old pc and see if that will work where FAHMON failed.

TurtleBlue

BTW, it looks like Stanford loaded up a couple of new d/l's for SMP clients (can't be sure since the link for "news" on stanford's site from work won't load) so mebbe that could add a few more points.

Does anyone have numbers for either 4870, 9800GX2 or GTX 260? Those are really all that are lacking now from the lineup. Would be nice to finish this thing off with all info.

Man picking out a video card is so hard right now, I can't decide on the 260 or the 280. I know the 280 is suppose to drop next month to around $350..SO hard to decide.

I am looking at adding another system for folding @ home.

The price point of the 9800 gx2 looks pretty good to me...

Gravity...won't the GPU client use both cores of the card to fold?

Just curious...

4850 results are no good. I was getting 2000-2500 ppd on my 3870, now I'm running my 4850 at 690/1100 and I'm not getting any better than the 3870...:| hopefully that new gpu2 client on aug 2 will show some improvement...

I was afraid of that. And yes, lets hope the new gpu2 client has improvements. So it seems as for now, the Nvidia cards have stronger results.
