GPU folding results

I pushed back getting the 4870 for a while until I see better results for ATi. I have been pondering on getting Nv but as my luck would have it, just when I do, Ati will have new beta clients that will start to smoke the points out. <---um, maybe that is wishful thinking.... Also, I have a fourth rig I have been working on and it takes precedence for now.

I hope it does turn out to be true that both brands are equally capable when it's all said and done. I guess I've just heard so many promises that never came to fruition over the past several years from the Stanford folks.

After installing version 1.15, frames seemed to complete a bit quicker. I installed (for the first time) FahMon on all three rigs running the GPU client -here are the resulting PPD per machine:

Rig#1 - 8800GT @ 700MHz/E7200 @ 2.53GHz ------ 5604 PPD
Rig#2 - 8800GT @ 700MHz/A64 3000+ @ 1.98GHz --- 5681 PPD
Rig#3 - GTX260 @ 625MHz/X2 4600+ @ 2.4GHz ----- 6798 PPD

Man, that GTX260 just rolls out the points.:thumbsup: Thats nice to see. I will have to give it some time for my 3870 as the rig it's on also has 2 smp's running and combined gets approx 5615 PPD. Will see if it ( gpu ) has better results.

Hey guys.

I'm a gamer, so I buy a GPU based on gaming performance but secondarily I began folding just recently. Well I think the strain put on my card by both gaming and folding killed it. Yes, my 8800GTS 320MB card is dead.

I have purchased an HD 4870 1GB card and I'd like to know, (if I decide to keep folding) how much PPD I'll get out of it???

I think I've seen numbers from 2500 to 3500 PPD. Maybe some 4870 owners could confirm?

Ya know Cheex, I have been wondering the same thing. I have been pushing back getting one as I have budget cuts for the time being. But I have decided to get one, it's just a matter of when? :roll:

After installing 180.48 drivers, my 9800GTX+ is now producing about 6800PPD. Previous was about 5600PPD. Anyone else finding this?

I've only seen your report and one other over at the fah forums. His PPD went slightly down?? (he was running multiple cards and SMP, so that may be confusing the result.)

I see that your new PPD is very close to what I get if I run my 9800GTX+ by itself. I suspect you cleared up an issue you were unaware of when you installed the new ones. 5600 PPD sounds very low for this card.

edit: I'm still running 178.24. Not that I think they are better, just haven't made time to update.

(stopped the client on the second GPU and stopped the SMP to check what PPD I really get from the 9800GTX+ when it runs alone on these drivers.)

Looks like the 9800GTX+ is getting something between 6,100 and 6,200 PPD here. Core=780 Shaders=Linked Memory=stock

702 core 1512 shader, memory stock 1107, on vista with smp running at the same time, Q6600@3.6 @ 2000ppd

It will be interesting to see the before and after results once Ati releases Stream and the developers get to work on implementing it into F@H applications. The 4xxx series has much more stream processing power than nVidia, so you should put up some monster numbers!
