Question Gpu suggestions

Hello everyone. I am doing a parts list for a gaming only pc. Cpu im either going for Intel 13600k or Amd 7700x. My monitor is a 240hz 1440p Asus Oled. Right now im just playing Fortnite and Resident Evil but plan on running some first person shooters. Looking for some gpu recommendations. I dont care about ray tracing. Which gpu will keep me in the 200 to 240ish fame rate with a little of the eye candy on? I dont know much about Amd gpus. For around 1100 mark is the 4080 worth it or overkill? Should i go with last gen gpus? Any responses are much appreciated. Thanks

Either the RTX 4080 or the RX 7900 XTX. Performance is similar, with each card trading victories in different titles. The 7900 XTX is a better deal overall. If you plan to keep your card for 5 years, the extra 8GB of RAM may become relevant. No guarantee though.

Sorry but downvote.

UE5 may become the dominant engine for most console AAA titles and its software based RT is no slouch. Plus, AMD is pushing hybrid RT which will minimize the impact of their GPU's lesser RT horsepower. Until there's a title where you can't turn RT off coz it has been designed around RT, 7900 XTX is the best bang for the buck.

Holy Hell this myth has gone on way too long. AMD has great drivers. Just see the video in this thread that was recent.

They are more than stable, they are better than Nvidia in some ways. I had trouble with drivers back in the ATI days and even then got them working fine. That has long passed.

AMD drivers do have this unfortunate side effect of the GPU fan going mad, if some instability causes the CPU to lock up. It's pretty scary. Not really sure if this ever happens to Nvidia cards because both times this happened to me, I was using an AMD card. But I guess I haven't tried an Nvidia card that long to run into issues.

Geforce 1060 3GB: Hardly used it coz my Radeon 580 had 8GB RAM.

Geforce 3090: Haven't used it much since installing it in my backup PC coz the RX 6800 and the AMD drivers were good enough for me to ignore it. I will maybe use it if the RX 6800 proves insufficient for the task at hand.

I wouldn't call it unfortunate, personally. If the drivers can't determine the GPU temperature, I'd prefer that the fans run full-tilt to ensure nothing is going to burn up.

That raises a curious question: do Nvidia GPUs have chip level thermal protection and AMD GPUs don't?

Again, asking because I don't know if Nvidia GPUs experience the full speed fan madness.

6950 XT cards are getting close to $600. It's only 16 GB of VRAM and gives around 75% of the performance as a 7900 XTX, but it is $400 cheaper.

TPU has it at around 150 FPS average in their test suite of games for 1440p. If you really do want 200 FPS the 7900 XTX is what you'd want instead. A 4080 is about the same, but a little more costly and if you're willing to spend $1200 for one, I'd say you may as well just get a 4090 which shouldn't have any issues going forward in terms of keeping frame rates high with settings maxed.

You could also go in the other direction and grab a 6800 XT for a bit over $500. The performance isn't much worse than a 6950 XT and you get the same 16 GB of VRAM.

I'm curious about that myself.

The last Nvidia GPU I owned was a 7600GT long long ago (not due to brand loyalty, just bang-for-the-buck at time of purchases).

No What I did was build my gaming pc and put my 3080 in it. My main pc that I use for working/everyday usage im just using the igpu. This fall ill see if any price drops happen and then grab either a 4080 or a 7900xtx.
