Idk about qualifying as an independent. They are signed on my lease right now (student subsidized housing), and were signed on my loans when I had them. Problem is, my parents are both divorced and remarried, and their combined income (from all 4 parents) is 200-250k so I don't qualify (my brother just got denied when they co-signed his loans). My dad has terrible credit, which I somehow inherited thanks to our clever banking system, and I can't even get approved for a pre-approved college credit card.

There is so much mis-information in this post, it's ridiculous.

1. You don't inherit your parents credit. Unless YOU have co-signed a loan for them, their credit has absolutely ZERO relevance to your credit.
2. Credit is irrelevant when applying for federal student loans.
3. If you are considered a dependent student, your parents income will be a factor in how much need-based financial aid you can get, but it will have ZERO impact on how much non need based (unsubsidized federal loans) financial aid you can get.

So unless there is something else you aren't telling us (drug convictions, etc.), you can get federal student loans for graduate school, regardless of your parent's income or credit score.

If you are truly passionate about history, as you say, then I'm assuming you got excellent grades, at least in your major classes. So you should be able to get accepted into a good grad school, where you will have the opportunity to get teaching or research assistantships to pay part of your way.

You can get a job as a:

1. Teacher (lots of competition with other liberal arts degrees)

2. Paralegal

3. Military guy

4. Cop

And some other scattered offerings. As a lawyer who occasionally hires college grads for paralegal positions, I can assure you that a person's major means nothing. Work ethic, speed, and ability to function independently are the top categories for me. I can all of these from a high school drop out and none from a 4.0 MIT engi grad. Goes to show.

I went to law school on an English degree and it worked out just fine. Law school is not a good option right now, however.

The above is correct. Inherited credit rating? I've never heard of such a thing. If you have a co-signor for a card, that might affect you, but even then I'm not certain. And you'd need an absymal 300 credit rating to get totally denied every CC out there - if they give you a $500-1,000 credit line at the egregious interest they charge, it's still profit for them as you pay it off little by little.

I didn't mean to imply that your 4 years were a waste, If I did, I apologize for that. I applaud you for going to college to get a degree in first place. A lot of people don't end up being what their major was in college. Like John Grisham thought he wanted to be a lawyer but ended up a very successful writer for example. And on the other end of the spectrum some people who start out as cops for example end up as being writers too, like the they guy who wrote all the NYPD television episodes, or Eddie Money who started out as a cop and ended being a rock star. The point is don't listen to what everyone thinks what you should be or end up as, find your own way. No telling what you will end up being or doing in life. Good luck though.

You have headed in a generally wrong direction with your History BA or Majors, as there are not a lot of things you can do with this specified field. Try to get a second hand major so you have a wider choice for the future during unexpected times.

When i worked at IBM, the CEO, Sam Palmisano, only had a history degree and no advanced degrees. He pulls in 10's of millions a year.

The OP could be the next millionaire CEO! :awe:

They cosigned all my private student loans, as well as my lease. My dad failed to pay his portion of my student loans( which is what we agreed on. I paid them all off now, but have terrible credit because of this) which is why i have shorty credit. I don't even qualify for the 500 a month student visa at wellsfargo which is practically given to kids. And idk about qualifying as an independent because I will be living at home after I graduate for a while, and thus my parents (all 4 of them) have to show up on my fafsa and since they make 200k plus combined I can't get funding. That's what I was told by financial aid at school when I applied

For some reason I can't Edity last post. But as part of my parents divorce agreement as long as I'm in school(or till 24 and without a degree) they get to claim me. One gets tuition the other gets books. Which I was told also hurts my chances of becoming a dependent as far as fafsa is concerned
