so now it looks like you're going to be spending your life doing something you don't like. As an added bonus, you'll have all that college debt + a paper weight!

this, i still dont understand...OP should have found something he was interested in working in and just gone to the library.

Teacher or working for the government. You'll need to get your teaching degree though, I think you can do that in like 6 months?

woe is me
This is why you can't get a job as an underwater basket weaver. Your spelling is horrible.

Your history degree isn't a total loss. You probably learned quite a bit about Word, Excel, and how to write reports. That's a handy skill to have.

In the long run robots will be doing all blue collar work. Saying robots is a gross oversimplification
Maybe OP could learn how to use robots then? When I was a chemist, I learned how to program a GC to automatically take samples from a tray of vials, inject them in a certain order, analyze them the way I want, then write a pdf report of it. Robots are doing it, but I'm telling the robot what to do

I am supposed to be graduating in May of next year, but have no idea what to do next. I will be getting my BA in History, and can't really do anything with it. I was thinking about going to Grad school, but I won't be eligible for any student loans. I haven't worked any internships because there are about 500 applications for every position I have applied for. I was planning on working for a government agency (CO hires a lot of federal/state employees), but there haven't been any entry level positions open since last yearish. I don't have any loans to pay off (I paid off my ones I used my first 2 years of college). I just have no idea what to do. I would appreciate any advice. Should I attempt to apply for graduate programs? I assume i'd have to take the GRE, as well as other things. But I am nearly certain I won't be able to qualify for loans (my little brother just got denied a loan with my parents co-signing). How good is monster.com for finding a job? Another option, is that I stay till next December and take some blow off classes I've wanted to take and couldn't and hopefully the job market gets better by then.

cliffs:
graduating college, dont know what to do.

edit: my minor is anthropology, and I only need 21 additional credits (semester + 1/2) to double major

1) turn on time machine Tardis 2.0
2) go back in time
3) change major from History to something employable. or dont goto college and get a McJob. Same as graduating w/History major except you save $$$ and 4yrs of your life

other options:
1) McJob
2) live in parents basement

Job prospects aint going to get better till 2012 when Obama is up for reelection. Then we'll see all those Federal dollars FLOW beginning Spring 2012 creating jobs in Fall 2012 intime for him to claim "Jobs #1 man"

until then, u r SOL for the next 2 yrs

sorry. reality is harsh

Oh Lord.

Someone else said it and I agree: Pick up another major in something somewhat-marketable and hope for the best.

I understand wanting to study what you love, but there HAS to be a happy medium between happiness and marketability.

I'm not trying to be condescending...but why, oh why did you get a degree in history? I don't understand why people are spending 40k+ at school for a degree that limits their career possibilities and gives them almost no marketable skills. If you had fun with your degree, that's fine, but when you matriculated, did you ever look to the future and think "what am I going to do with this degree after I graduate?". You're obviously not a student athlete with the ability to go pro so that's an excuse out the door.

Of my good friends from college:
-1 graduated with a BA-History degree. He got a degree only so he could go into the USMC and he's now a 2nd Lt as a Communications Officer. He got a shload of marketable skills from Comm School.
-1 graduated with a Poli Sci degree so he could join the Navy. Currently in Advanced Jet Flight School
-1 graduated with a Poli Sci degree and isn't doing jack besides trying to get into Law School
-1 graduated with a Poli Sci degree and is trying to become a cop. Been looking for almost 12 months now. Nothing
-1 graduated with a Poli Sci degree and is working at Sam's Club
-1 graduated with me (5 years) with a Mechanical Engineering Degree. He's a 2nd Lt in the Army with the Corps of Engineers
-I graduated in 5 years with a Building Construction Degree. Now work for a Construction Management company.

Trend: Guys with BAs in the military are fine. Guys with BAs not in the military are screwed.

HS grads are expected to go to college regardless of how they do in HS. I can see this being a big problem in about a decade.

poli sci to get into the Navy. WHY!?

5yrs w/a BS MechE in the Army and he;s still a 2nd LT?! WTF??!?!

Army:
2nd LT for ~1.5yrs max. Auto promotion to 1st LT else get booted from Army.
~4yrs (max) after that is Captain. Altho not automatic, it's rubber stamped.
At the 10yr mark if you;'re not a Major, it's time to quit and be a civilian contractor for the govt. you've been pigeon holed as a capt for life.

So true. It's a shame society has put such a stigma on vocational training, it's such a great route for many people.

DC area- All major union trades (Hvac, plumber, electrician, elevator, etc) are making $40/hr plus FREE medical + pension

I would contact my school's placement office for assistance. For all we know, there's a rich alumnus who runs a business and loves to hire history grads.

Just start applying for jobs OP. I have degrees in History and Anthropology and I work for a county government doing IT work :awe:

I think thats the only advice anyone has actually given me in this thread. Thanks for all the flames, and yes, History was the only thing that appealed to me when I started college 4 years ago. I like learning about it, and I like writing about it, and I don't regret my decision. I just don't know what to do next.

Lol, I kinda walked my self into that one didn't I?

Seriously though, what options do I have in the military? Anyone with experience in the military care to chime in.

Is there some way of qualifying as independent from your parents in the meantime? If they aren't affiliated with your finances, then you might stand a chance of getting some financial aid, though I've got no idea how that sort of thing works out.
Talk to the counselors at college?

My experience with historians:
- Professor for World History 001.
- Portrayals of them on Stargate.:sneaky:

You can go the officer route, go talk to a recruiter and see what kinds of options they have for you. Depending on what kind of shape you're in, start working out now.

if u have to ask what is next after college, I would consider you fail.

if u have money, just go travel around the world for like a year to learn yourself more.

I would go to grad school ONLY if you can get an assistantship that will pay your tuition + a stipend. There's no point in getting yourself in a lot of debt (or more debt) if it's in a field where you can only make about ~$35k/year with a masters degree.

If you can't get an assistantship, I'd either get a different undergrad degree (at least you have all of your electives covered) or start applying to generic management programs that don't care what kind of bachelors you have.

If you want to go to grad school for History, I don't think that you would have too much difficulty in getting an assistantship, assuming your GPA is halfway decent. I would guess that the majority of people that end up in grad school (and aren't going into law, business, or medicine) don't actually pay for their tuition. There are lots of opportunities out there.

Everyone posts here as if every single person knows exactly what they want to do while in college and when they graduate. That simply isn't true. I graduated in 2008 from grad school and knew what field I wanted to go into, but not what I really wanted to DO. I took my first professional position (which I got mainly through being able to interview very well). From there I got a better idea of what I wanted to do and changed jobs early this year.

My suggestion (other than joining the military which is something everyone should do) is to start randomly looking at hob descriptions on indeed.com or a similar site and find *activities* you would enjoy. Use that to find the positions that look interesting and start angling for them.
