Graphics card problem?

I have d/l and installed Shuttle Space Mission Demo but when I try to start it I get the following error message:-

GL_ARB_shader_objects extension not supported

I am on windows XP with all service packs and my graphics card is BFG GeForce 9600GT.

Is this problem with the card and can it be sorted?

Could be a lot of things. It could be an older version of DX9 installed on your OS, perhaps an issue with the game itself (most likely, IMO)... I doubt it is the card, honestly. I'd either google that error message, or search the forums of the company that develops the game for any users that are reporting the same problem or fix/work around.
