Well People can play oblivion easy with a 7900GT or X1900XT :!
But yeah some GPU may not be so good for games like UT2007 , Bioshock , Crysis but i did see at GDC 06 Crysis running on a single X1900XT and it looked great. If i were you i would wait till November to buy a graphic card , if rumor are true then Nvidia starts its production of G80 mid next month and they go on sale on early November. But if your looking for a True DX10 card then you may have to wiat untill Mid Jan for ATI R600. If you do wait till Jan to buy a new computer than you would be able to pick up Quad Core Intel CPU , RD600/G80 and RD600 motherboard which look to destroy nvidia 590 motherboard.
It was either running on a sample DX10 GPU or X1900XTX crossfire. NOT on a single X1900XT. (This applies to Crysis. Plus, UT2007 was smooth running on a 6800 ultra about 2 years ago)
Why is the R600 a "true" DX10 card? Once again, people have this misconception that if a GPU is not employing a unified shader architecture its not a"full" DX10 card.
Last rumour i heard on R600 was that its going to be delayed til early next year, but also its going to be 33cm long (similiar to the 7900GX2), uses 3 PCI-e slots, and requires 200W by itself. Heres the link.

Finally, you cant just assume that the RD600 board is going to destroy the NF590 SLi chipset. Right now, the nforce5 590 SLi offers the most feature (link boost, Dual Net, SLi, EPP memory to name a few) and gives the highest performance overall based on other motherboards. Since the intel edition 590 is going to be released with the new C55 MCP, the OCibility of the motherboards will greatly enhance.
To the OP. G80 will hit around november, or december with a hard launch. I also read that the Intel Core2 Extreme 6900 (kensfield) Quad Core will hit Q4/06. 2.66ghz with 1333fsb if you got the cash.
Not to mention the new intel Nforce5 mobos with the new C55 MCPs hitting around that time as well. So wait til then.
Note - DX10 games releasing when Vista hits will still be similiar to DX9 games. It will take quite some time for the gaming industry to move to DX10, something similiar to DX8 --> DX9. I dont buy into future proof stuff as there is better cards across the corner. So buy the card that is fastest now or when your going to buy it.
