Couldn't the same be said of any invention? There have been very few eureka moments in human history. Most inventions were tiny incremental evolutionary changes in other things that preceded them until they finally reached a tipping point to become useful. The ideas behind the printing press were in use for more than 1000 years before Gutenburg. His was the evolutionary change that was viewed as the most important, but there were a long line of evolutionary changes all leading in the same direction.

Yes, but like electricity and math, it could be argued that Language was actually a pre-existing phenomenon that was discovered, or even described more than it was created

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolutionary_linguistics

We didn't invent fire or evolution, we just learned how to control and describe concepts that existed long before humanity. Such is, quite possibly, the same with language.

After all, lesser creatures had means of communicating among themselves, and even transmitting information to others, long before humans were around, and they still do.

along the lines of Gutenburg and the Printing Press, the Steam Engine was first created, described, and displayed in ancient Greece, ....just a few thousands of years before Watt, or whoever it was is credited with it.

Anesthesia is probably the best invention of all.

If I was bleeding to death, and some doctor said "Oh we're gonna have ta chop that bit off, burn this bit and tie yer skin tagether wit' these 'ere needles.", without anesthesia, I'd just choose the blood loss.

A lot of great inventions, if not most of them, are a combination of previous inventions and advancements that are either taken to the next level or put together and executed in a way others hadn't previously done.

I didn't read the thread, has porn been mentioned yet?

And I'll throw down a vote for pizza also.

Edit: Math too

The wheel? The cell phone? Electricity?
Well I guess electricity was not exactly an invention.

I've come to realize what was the greatest invention in history.
The greatest benefit to man kind.

The Chair.

Just as little food for thought....

30m Chinese still live in caves, yet I assume that they have "language". Caves can be super neat, you know.

I'd say the mass availability of either internet porn or bacon. Either of them makes everything else in life just...better.

Huh? Where?

The press is probably one of the most important. Scientific method would be up there too.

I personally always think the light bulb is massively overlooked. It was the light bulb that lead to the rapid spread of electricity, which then allowed for the creation of many other uses. I guess you could also say electricity distribution in general.

I agree on the parachute thing. Without them, I would not have survived even my first skydive...

good point. The parachute really solved that generations-long falling through the lower atmosphere problem that was killing all us humans.

It also wrecked our standard circadian rhythm and is quite possibly wrecking our general health in weird and not-completely-understood ways.

But maybe not the worst drawback. The benefits are huge, obviously, as it seems that those health problems are becoming fixable as we understand the important differences through the light spectrum (blue is very very bad at night, and this is now easily fixed with smart LEDs). But you could also find horrible consequences for any major innovation:

--the wheel was great for industry and labor--but it allowed us to go anywhere, carry larger things, meaning destroying more and more and more things in the process

--the printing press brought knowledge to humanity and absolutely carried us out of the dark ages....but man was The Church pissed!

This show will give you a completely different perspective on greatest inventions and people that actually made it happen......

How we got to now with Stephen Johnson
http://www.pbs.org/show/how-we-got-now/

It's on Netflix as well. Great for kids too!

I would probably say Glass. Without it our life would be much much different. We would still think earth is flat....no high speed internet....no windows....no TV/Phone screens...and on and on

Well, he's no James Burke, but the preview looked interesting. I'll definitely check some out.

EDIT: Hmm, looks like I won't be checking it out after all. PBS has put up a paywall. www.pbs.org takes me to a site specific to my local PBS channel and no longer the main PBS page I used to be able to reach. Boo.
