I thought it was a very well made, powerful movie. There are probably others out there that I would like even better, but have yet to see. Until then I'm sticking with Requiem.

For all of those who said Citizen Kane, can I please just ask you why? After I saw that it was rated the best movie of all time by some magazine, I was curious to check it out, and if you ask me, the movie was slow and boring. Sure, I know that it was a sattire and used some special effects that were pretty amazing for the time period, but it was just boring and not entertaining at all. Certainly not one of my most favorite movies. But my most favorite movie probably would be Life is Beautiful

Citizen Kane didn't just use some effects that were amazing for the time period, it set a way of telling a story through moving pictures that had never really been done before on that level. The reason it doesn't seem like much to you is because you've seen plenty of movies before it. What you haven't realized, however, is that every movie you've probably ever seen stems from the way Citizen Kane was made.

Anyway, I was watching Apocolypse Now again today and every time I watch it, I'm always in complete awe of how well that movie was made. Especially with all the crazy stuff surrounding the film. It was truly a beat of it's own.

Strange, none of the biggest all time openings that I can remember made the top of the list.
In my time some of th biggest openings were

Dick Tracy
Terminator 2
Batman
Jurassic Park
Star Wars Episode 1
Independence Day
Titanic
Lord of the Ring
Star Wars Episode 2
Spider Man

These are the movie that opened big and shattered previous records, and of the lot only Lord of the Ring made it to the top.

I totally understand how Citizen Kane created these new limits for movies, but I like to judge my movies on entertainment...I mean, isn't that what movies are for? I don't really get entertained by a slow moving movie. If you judge on breakthroughs in technology, then maybe Terminator should be listed as number 1. That movie had incredible effects. But I do have to agree with you on the Apocalypse Now movie. That was really good, especially watching it after reading Heart of Darkness

I imagine that if someone here mentioned Titanic, they'd be in for a horrible demise.

empire strikes back and of coarse the rest of sw
but lotr has really intrigued me in the past couple weeks, never saw it in the theatre, but it is a solid movie, the only thing that takes you(me) out of the movie exerience is galadrials freaky transition, just takes me out completely, like what the fock!!

shawshank and green mile where cool, even own the dvds, but those are once-in-a-while watchers. I always like billybob when he first gets clocked by that big cop, he says, "you're a big focker aren't you"...

I also liked the whole nine yards , I love it when matthew perry runs into the glass door and can't talk right away.

The first rule is that I'm not supposed to talk about my favorite movie...

The second rule is that I'm NOT SUPPOSED TO TALK ABOUT MY FAVORITE MOVIE...

Movies are for entertainment, but it's not the only way to judge them. There are technical details you can judge a film on. I still don't think you have a grasp on what exactly this movie did for filmmaking. To put it in basics, there probably wouldn't have been a Terminator had Citizen Kane never been made.

Here are some of my favourites (in no particular order):

American Beauty
Forrest Gump
Terminator 2
L. A. Confidential
Godfather Part II
Pulp Fiction
the entire orignal Star Wars trilogy (and none of the new ones)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Akira
Patlabor 2 (the last two are anime)
Goodfellas
Braveheart

... many more that I can't think of right now!

Edit: yeah, and LOTR. Didn't want to put it because everyone has it, and because it's so new, but it's just such a well made film with so many powerful moments ... "don't you lose him Samwise Gamgee. And I don't mean to. I don't mean to".
