I picked up the game last night and put maybe 2.5 hours into it. Some random thoughts:

- Graphics look really good on the 360. Draw distance is impressive, I haven't really noticed any frame rate issues. It isn't top of the line graphics by any means but it really fits the world well.
- Driving controls suck for fast cars. I guess I just need to get used to it but if I'm not driving in a straight line, I can't do anything. If it's a case of having to upgrade your car to make it handle decent, that sucks because I don't find it in GTA-style to have to keep up with a car. It's called GTA after all.
- Voice actors are really good and well spoken. I'm able to keep up with the story so far because I can understand them without having to crank the sound up.
- I hate the little black box in the upper-left corner that is telling you how to do stuff. I sit about 7' from a 47" TV and it's so small that I don't notice it pop up half the time. When I do notice, I have to focus on the small text so much that the game itself completely disappears in my peripheral. This sucks when they're telling you how to do 8 different things while you're trying to do something during a mission.
- So far, the missions have been entertaining and different. I hope that keeps up (looks like it will).

I plan to put a lot more time into it this weekend. I hate new GTA games just for the sole fact that I don't know the map yet and that's only fixed with time. From what I've seen of the map so far though, I like the variation between parts of the city...haven't traveled north yet.

There should be an option to have the game pause when tips like that come up.

I can't believe there is no map zoom option. How the hell is that not in this game?

Overall I think the game is really good. I think it could be a great game if it was just centered on Franklin and the other two were only NPCs. I've encountered a few bugs, but nothing show stopping (Cars I save at Franklin's house disappear as an example).

The missions seem a lot more sparse compared to GTA IV, and shooting while driving could be better tweaked, but I love this game.

There is...when looking at the map i believe press R2 on ps3 and I think RT on 360. It may be L2 but one zooms in and one zooms out. It tells you this on the bottom of the screen under the map when you pause the game.

The cars don't save if you don't bring them back to the garage. If you leave it somewhere it never magically pops back in the garage. You need to go to the impound and pay $250 to get it back.

In short always bring your cars back to the garage if you want to keep them. The only exception is when you move safe houses it doesn't move the car and it is gone after that.

The car thing is a pain. I like the way that saints row handles car storage/retrieval.

I played gtav for about four hours last night , not bad

You would think Franklin's Aunts house (the safe house) has a garage so you could save a car there, but as far as I can tell it doesn't work.

The car you park there will stay there. That is what saving a car means. It doesn't just magically pop up everywhere or get back to your house if you leave it somewhere. 90% of the time, it is a stolen car anyway. This is how every other GTA game works as well. SR4 did something a bit different and allowed you to spawn cars, but that was supposed to be a computer simulation.

It does work...if you park a car there and come back 5 hours later it is still there in the same condition you left it in. If you take that car and drive around and wreck it, leave it somewhere, get arrested, or get wasted it does not appear in the garage. You need to go to the police impound and pay the $250 fee to get it back. I don't know what is so hard about this concept. If you leave your car, it can't drive itself back home.

This is much more realistic and believable than it just reappearing at the garage every time.

The best thing to do is use the quick save option as often as you can(like before a mission or race). Then you can reload if you wreck or something.

Right, the only cars the will reappear at the house are their own personal cars not any that you've stolen or picked up for missions.

I believe any you've used for missions show up at the impound afterwards if you ditch it.
The van you use as Franklin to kidnap that guy showed up at the impound because you run off with chop to find him and I ditched the van.

Yes and the vehicle is the last one you ditched. So if you leave that infernus and grab a van then leave the van and get in a bus and go to check the impound the infernus won't be there.

The one thing thing Saints Row has that this game has always lacked is the ability to store like 50 cars in your garage. I don't care about realism, I want to collect cars.

Part of the problem with reading lots of previews/reviews of the game in advance of playing it is I'm playing knowing that certain features are going to be available but wondering how long it's going to take for those gameplay mechanics to show up. To wit, everyone, by this point, knows that there are three primary protagonists you can switch between... Except at the beginning of the game, you're just playing as one of them for a few missions until the second is introduced. And the introduction of the third main character (the one who all the reviewers pegged as the most interesting, no less) happens hours into the main storyline. I've been playing in the evenings after work the past few days, put maybe 11 hours into the game, and I just now am at a point where I can actually switch between all three people at will. I can understand why they did it from a storytelling perspective, but because I read so much media about that gameplay mechanic beforehand, I almost feel like the first 11 hours were just training missions and I'm finally starting on the actual game... I suppose I should just stop getting myself amped up with reviews.

But hot damn, the game is amazing. The lighting and water are so vastly improved over GTA IV, it's astounding. I wish the day/night cycle was biased a little bit more towards longer days; it's hard to see some of the markers at night (yes, I've adjusted my contrast). And the text is way too small. I'm on a 52" TV and I can make it out OK, but I have to focus on it (which distracts me from, say, driving), and my friend I've been playing it with, who is apparently half blind, has to lean in and squint just to guess at what it says. I hate to think of people playing it on smaller TVs.

But apart from those minor gripes, I've enjoyed everything about it. The biting humor of the radio ads. The characters. The missions. The setting. It's crazy.

Speaking of crazy, I was going through the available property for sale, and you can buy a golf course for $150 million. How the holy balls are you ever going to get $150 million? Apparently Rock Star has sold us a kingpin simulator.

I'd imagine, once you get enough money, you can start investing and figuring out what will cause certain market fluctuations. Buy stock, complete a mission, sell stock for massive profit. But, eventually, according to some talk in the game, you can set up heists on your own, so if you just do a bunch of those, it shouldn't be hard to get some money.

Speaking of which, has anyone done any trading on the stock market yet? I've unlocked the ability to trade stocks, and I thought I was supposed to be getting some stock tips, but so far, nothing (so I haven't bothered). Granted, I've only done the first actual heist, and I didn't really have much scratch to invest beforehand, but it seems like something that I should be doing prior to any additional heists to up my take.

I seem to remember more objects casting their own shadow when you light them up with headlights in GTA4, maybe that was only the PC version.

I did some just based on blind guesses (I invested like $20,000 into the burger place) and when I checked back, I actually made like $1500 or so from selling it the stock. You'd have to make large investments to make any real money.

Yeah, I opened up the stock site for the first time (just to check it out), and some of the companies had +45% swings. I'm guessing that's going to be a ticket to huge returns in later heists.

Well, I think the ones with the big swings are related to missions you do. Like the LifeInvader stock tanking hard. So, listen to what you're mission is having you do and then invest in competitors seems to be the best strategy (I only say competitors because this is GTA, you don't do anything nice for people in this game).

I've ran across a couple of random burglaries so far. The first I returned the stolen goods but the second time, I kept the cash (it doubled my current total). Are there rewards for returning stolen goods, any reason to do so?

I don't know. I never stop and do any of the random encounters stuff unless it is on accident. (Someone stole someone's purse as I was speeding by and I ran them over).

I had a pretty cool moment where I needed to kill somebody that was on a window washing platform up on a building. I missed him with my shot and he ducked down and I couldn't hit him. It started to worry me because the cops were closing in. In a desperate measure I thought that maybe I could shoot the rope holding up the platform. Boom rope splits and guy falls to his death. Awesome.
