Reading about how shitty it runs and how Rock* never said anything about addressing the graphics problems, is probably gonna make me end up downloading the game whithin the next few weeks. No way are they getting my $$ if they cant code the game right. There's no way a PS3 or xbox has more processing power and video power than high end gaming PCs. -_-

It's doubtful the patch will make any major improvements in how it runs, I'm not hearing a lot of complaints about bugs, they're almost all about how shitty it runs. When a person with Crossfire 4870's & a C2D is only getting 40FPS on medium settings. I have no hope a patch will make it playable on my box. A shame too because this is one of the only games I would have liked to buy. I could be wrong about the patch, but I'm betting the engine was poorly ported to the PC. When GHIII runs like shit on my PC I don't have hope a GTA IV port will fare better

I still don't understand why GH III runs like ass, even with the so called Patch Red Octane released it still stutters and lags like shit on my PC.

So, it isn't good enough to play if you have to pay for it, but its good enough to play if you're able to yarr it?

If this game had some AA, then I would be a very happy camper with the graphics. I think at "medium" settings, it looks very good for a GTA game. It looks better than it does on the consoles, and much better than previous GTA games. Comparing the graphics to Crysis or something like that is apples/oranges. The city is HUGE, and there are many more things going on at any given moment compared to a game like Crysis. And this series has NEVER been about superior graphics, its always been about gameplay.

Just force it though the ATI/Nvidia control panel.

They announced they were working on a patch on the 6th and said it'd be read in the "next few days". I've always taken 'few' to mean 3 but I guess it's not specifically any number, just more than one and less than 6 probably

So, I have my fingers crossed it'll be released tomorrow. I should be able to play it right after the patch, since it supposedly fixes "ATI 1900 shadows".

Is there anyway to play GTAIV like you can with GTA3 ? I don't want to do any missions right now but when I get out the car and into a different car the mission restarts

Didn't happen in GTA3.

If the game is a POS then i wold still play it, but not pay for it. Hence why i downloaded FC2 even tho i got the game with the new video card and then I sold the game to a friend.

Had I payd 40$ for FC2 I would have been very angry. IMO it's a really bad GTA wannabe game, just with a FPS twist.

Yeah, that makes sense.

Hmm, lemme explain more

As far as POS I mean if the game is not all that great looking, or it has problems or the game play sucks, I would still like to try it out, but would not pay for it. IDK if that makes more sense. Perfect example, I saw lots of vids for MOH Airbourne, reviews, and gameplay video, the game wasn't that amazing and did not look that great either, would not buy it, but I downloaded it to play it for awhile and see for myself. Same with FC2, is looks good, but the gameplay is not that appealing at all (check out all the FC2 Sucks threads) so I decided to DL it cause I didn't see it worthy of 40$ from all the bad reviews etc and terminally, playing it for myself.

But if I really want a game, and it's damn good, then I will pay for it like I did for Crysis, Warhead, GTA San Andreas a few yrs back, and Assassins Creed and UT3.

Even Crysis has better frame rate then this one. How dare Rockstar saying that GTA IV was created with "future hardware" in mind. Give me the fu***** game functional today, on today's hardware! I don't care if it'll work best on ATi 6870 or Nvidia GTX 400, I want to play it now on my 4870, but sadly, I can't, because I have 10-15 fps. What is wrong with their brain?

That little mention of 'memory' will hopefully address the memory leak, which for many people (myself included) would mean a large increase to performance. I'm keeping my fingers crossed

if you dont have sp3 installed (winxp sp3) currently then here is a a very easy fix so you can run gta4, just reboot after applying it

save to .reg file and apply

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows]
"CSDVersion"=dword:00000300

of course it is probably best to change the "300" back to "200" (sp2) if you are about to upgrade to sp3.

I realize it varies with configurations but I can report that I don't have any bad graphic problems, zero crashes, etc. It does not run very well though. I had to turn it down to 1440x900 medium with some drops on the sliders to get it pretty playable. It slows down the worse for me when it is raining. It is mostly my CPU; I expect even with a C2D I could return to the default of 1680x1050 with higher details (the 512MB on my 4870 seems to just be enough for that).

But either way, I am very glad I bought it when I did. Very fun to play.

It's odd that the Rockstar dev post says gains in the new ATI driver, but the release notes for 8.12 do not mention GTA 4. However I could use it anyway and there are other gains in games I play. So I'm gonna upgrade to them then play GTA4 the rest of the night.

Hrm, I'm using the 8.12 beta drivers...could they be the same as the official released 8.12 drivers? Probably not - Had to change video drivers a lot lately. Driver Cleaner doesn't seem to work in Vista 64 either.

What control schemes are you folks using? I'll probably use mostly a controller (when the next patch comes out since only the 360 controller is allowed now) and then use the keyboard mouse when I have to be really accurate, like for sniping etc.

I was using only keyboard + mouse, then I plugged in my 360 controller to use both (mainly for driving). I guess I am more used to the kb + mouse but actually except for the driving being a little better, I like the kb + mouse overall. I think I'll keep it plugged in for the next few plays then decide.

anyone else here have it lock up on loading screen with the characters? I haven't even seen the game yet. Both benchmark and single player won't go past this screen.

Grab Driver Sweeper from guru3d. Forget about drivercleaner. Run Driver Sweeper in administrator mode. Works fine in Vista 64.
