If you look at the recommended system it specifically ask for 2.5gb of ram with vista and 2gigs for xp. A good measure would be slightly higher than that. There's no memory leak. It's swapping through page file because it's running out of ram. The cacheboost doesn't do anything except unload system files and free ram up for programs.

HD thrashing = turn off clip capture. Everything you do in the game is being recorded if you leave that on, so your HD is constantly writing as it's trying to read the massive amount of textures and game content.

That still doesn't work. Even after I turned it off, I get horrible studdering with the specs below. Benchmark says my CPU/Ram is 94 and 96% utilized, with vid card at like 80%. Got 4 gigs of memory on the way, we'll see what happens then.

Is this game greater or equal to the 360? Does it look MUCH better or basically same graphics that load faster and higher res?

Bought it this weekend and it plays wonderfully on my GF's box, I have no idea the FPS's I'm getting but the only time I notice slow down is when I'm walking in the lobby of a tiddy bar. Aside from that it runs beautifully. Specs:

C2D E8400
4 gigs
Radeon 4850 512 meg
Windows XP

Runs flawless, I don't think improved FPS's would matter it's flying right now. Also I don't think I'm noticing a memory leak. She played about 7 hours straight and I played about 3 or so on the same game and we had zero crashes and no slow downs. I know a lot of people are having issues with it running like shit, but it's like butter here.

we don't have the patch installed, I didn't know about it until today.

It looks way better but the port is so crappy that it doesn't run nearly as well as it should. It's also marred with clipping and just bugs in general. In other words dont give them your money for this half assed port.

If you have high end rig it does look better.

A GPU with 1gig of vram you can turn up the textures to high considering the xbox version is on medium and a quad core would keep your low and average frame rates up.

Your system should look slightly better than the xbox version. You should be able to turn up the draw distance further.

Hmm, so I guess my system (the one in my sig) ain't up to snuff to play on high settings. That blows big time. I'll stick with my 360 version then. Thanks.

Damn... NICE. I'm getting even more excited now about it, should have it tomorrow. and I don't think ill be having the horrible LOW FPS that so many talk about. I might sell my current card and get a GTX280 soon tho.

Eh? Your rig will run it at notably higher than 360 settings with better framerate as well.

I don't know about better frame rates. Xbox 360 has triple core @ 3.2ghz. It can do more FLOPS than core 2 duo.

GTA4 runs on my system alright. It does dip into high teens but that's when there's so much stuff on screen and usually hover around 20-30fps outside. It's not bad but it's not great either. Dual core has limits with this game. The amount of AI and physics is what keep the frame rates down. GTA is one of those engines that scale with CPU not GPU. A 280gtx can't make the frames that much better than a 8800gt.

I thought someone said that GTA IV didn't have any DRM? Was I wrong or was that a different game? I just installed the copy I got from GoGamer and it says that it installs securerom and then afterit installs you have to activate it online.

oh, and you can't play the fucking game unless you can login to the club that won't allow me to register...

edit: nvm, i didn't see the skip login button before.

edit: hit play. games for windows live needs to be updated. download that and install. oh, install failed. try again. install failed. wtf...relaunch gta iv. game loads now. sign in to games for windows live. you need to update the game. update. sign in to gfwl. downloading profile. you need to update gfwl. download. log into gfwl. wrong password. reset password. go back to gta4. the damn window won't let me type anything. can't exit, so i have to go to task manager and kill gta4. restart and try to login. gfwl TOS has changed. please accept the new TOS to play.

talk about runaround before you can play.

at least i can play now though. it's not bad, pretty much like every other GTA ever made. i wish the cars wouldn't handle like shit though.

yes it will. Xbox 360 is 1280x720 with low settings, 22 view distance, 10 detail distance. It runs at 30fps with those settings.

Even my Core2Duo + HD3870 do better than that.

Video memory usage: 92%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1920 x 1080 (60 Hz)

How do you get the ZIT feature to work? the manual says you use your cell phone but i don't see that listed on the phone any where.

But does the Xbox version constantly have dips in performance and slowdowns when driving through heavy city landscape? I doubt it.

Sort of. The Xbox version would blur over when driving, making the game ugly as hell. If it actually tried to draw everything without the blur, it would probably lag out just like the PC version.

This social club program is god damn bullshit. The manual states that it's not required for the singleplayer campaign, so I skipped installation of it. I go to load it up, and what do you know, the social club is required. I install it, get some stupid error during installation about .NET framework, and the program crashes every time I try to load it. I don't care about SecurROM, and I don't care about poor performance. I care about this because I CANT FUCKING PLAY THE GAME. Fuck you Rockstar.

Mine was fucked too until someone on the Steam forum suggested I run every installer in the install folder (the steam version has an install folder so I assume your DVD has one as well).

The Steam version is still kinda fucked because it cannot be started from the Steam menu or from the Rockstar program. The only way I can start the game is if I run "launchgtaiv.exe" in the GTA folder.

This has to be the single most difficult game in history to get working. Typing retarded commands into my commodore 64 is nothing compared to this.
