gtx 460 vs 6870

but what about a super clocked 460?

dont really want a amd card and dont really want a 470 due to heat. would this super clocked 460 match a stock 6870?

i dont plan to overclock my graphics card, i dont plan to sli/cf.

i have a 120hz monitor that i play counter-strike @ 800x600 res if that matters?

there have been tons of comparisons with the gtx460 and 6870 both overclocked. heck pretty much every 6870 review included an EVGA overclocked gtx460 FTW. in other words if you look at reviews then you will know they are basically right there with the 6870.

and if all you care about is playing counter strike at 800x600 then even modern integrated video can do that.

i only mentioned cs @ 800x600 120hz because ive read of problems running 120hz at non native resolutions with ati. wasnt sure if it was true, cs isnt the only game i play.

If you don't want an AMD card and don't want a 470, all that's left in the same performance range is an O/C 460.

It's debatable whether or not you need that much card for your resolution. I'm sure a GTS-450 would be fine as well.

ive been reading the nvidia doesnt have the problems that amd(ati) has with running 120hz at non native resolution, only reason im asking about the difference between the 460 i listed and a 6870 performance wise.

im still trying to find out if what i read is true because if its not ill get the 6870.

my bad. I thought you played all your games at 800x600. still doesn't make any sense that you would stay at 800x600 after upgrading since any decent high end card can average 300 fps at 1920x1080.

You're struggling over semantics. In a double blind test you'd never know the difference between any of the 3 cards you mentioned. Performance wise there really isn't much to choose between them.

Personally, I'd go for the 6870, with the 460 as second choice. I'd pass on the 470 for the same reason you've mentioned.

Right now I'm waiting for 6870 cards with custom coolers to be released. Either an MSI Hawk/Lightning style or maybe an ECS with an AC Acellero cooler, would be ideal IMO.

I would get one of the many sub $200 gtx460 cards and oc it. the 6870 has gone up in price and it makes no sense if getting the best card at this level for the money is your goal. heck there is only one 6870 in stock right now at newegg and it is 300 bucks.

ah in that case if i wouldnt notice much difference between that 460 model and a 6870 ill go with the that 460. slightly cheaper, no problems with my 120hz at low res for cs, and could one day be a dedicated physics card on my next rig. was just concerned about how much greater the 6870 really would be.

dont really want to oc the card why i selected one of the highest clocked cards. think it was 800 or 810mhz

If you go with a 460 running that high a clock (not that they have trouble running +800MHz) I'd really lean towards on with a lifetime warranty. They use a fair amt. more power than say a 6870, or even the stock 460. If you want to keep it for a while and, like you said, use it as a physx card in the future.

Keep in mind, you are comparing a pretty heavily O/C 460 to a stock 6870. Not really an apples to apples comparison. At stock speeds the 6870 gobbles up the 460.

I remember reading a thread on anandtech that a 460 overclocked to 470 level draws more power than a 470, however, don't remember if it generates as much heat. You may want to find that thread.

if your'e not overclocking....the general consensus on heirarchy is as follows....

470 > 6870 > 460 (1GB) & 6850 > 460 (768MB)

if you care about things like wattage/power draw and the burden on your PSU... then the 470 will be an issue.. .

From an out of pocket cost perspective.. the 470 is really cheap now, with rebates, etc.. I saw one from ASUS for 219 on the EGG yesterday... and others within a few bucks of that as well.....


Your original post was sort of misleading.. Most folks would typically state the most stressful conditions they plan on putting their card through.. so you can understand why some folks jumped on your when you mentioned CS at 800X600

If it consumes as much power than it generates the same heat.

The chip itself might run as a lower temperature, but that is due to the cooler differences. The only difference is where the heat ends up - in the GPU, inside the case, the room etc.

Regarding the OP question if the AMD cards can or not run displays at non-native resolutions, I think it is possible, but not entirely sure.

The 6870 consumes less power than either GTX470 or an OC GTX460 so it will generate less heat, but the GPU itself might run hotter.

So if you are concerned about the GPU running at a low temperature, then the GTX460 is generally a better choice, although some custom cooling GTX470 or 6870 might run as cool or cooler. If the problem is the environment around you warming up then the 6870 is the better choice.
