Be it for better or be it for the worse, I have a XFX 5870 on the UPS truck for delivery today. I did my first and last BCB purchase and ended up spending about $50 less than what I had spent on the 470. I ended up with:
I7-930 $200
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R $200
Corsair XMS3 6GB cas 8 $180 AR
Antec 200 case $40
CM Hyper 212 Plus cooler $20
XFX 5870 $330 BCB
Antec Quattro 850 -Already had
WD 640 Black HD-Already had
Sony DVD writer-Already had
2-120mm case fans-Already had
Certainly a better price and performance, and it will complement the rest of your rig nicely. Post back and let us know what you think .

Got my new PSU and 470 installed lastnight. The fan noise didn't bother me, even running at 70%. All the way up to 100% wasn't horrible either compared to other fans on gpus that made a high-pitch or blow-dryer sound.

Temps - idle at around 45c and gaming it went up to 78c

So far, so good. Used to have lock-ups and crashes while playing BFBC2 but had none lastnight.

My system isnt loud by any stretch of the imagination. I have had loud systems in the past. This one I can barely hear the fans if my speakers are off. Compared to the 4850 that it replaced this is quiet as hell. The only way I could see somebody complaining about how loud the 470 is if they are running a truely silent system.

yeah, I went from a 4850 to a gtx 260 last year and it was like night and day. stupid single slot cooler!!!

Were the crashes with the 470 and the weaker PSU? If so what PSU and CPU were you using and what rating did you upgrade to?

No, it was using a 500w Seasonic and a 8800GT. Upgraded to a 750w Antec and the 470. The game would freeze, screen would go black or the screen would freeze w/ a torn screen.

all you guys who are complaining about noise need to oc more and listen less. I swear that I have to manually set my gtx 260 fan to 80% to detect it over my antec 300 case fans (all are on high).

So just to clarify your Seasonic 500W was not sufficient for a 470? That seems shocking since most Core i7 920/965 systems + 470 pull around 370-380W from the PSU.

um you do realize that a gtx260 is a very quiet card don't you? 80% is pretty loud though but luckily it rarely goes above 40% even after hours of gaming so its basically dead silent.

Does SLi still work if you hook up your first monitor to the first card, and second monitor to the second card? Or must you have all the monitors connected to one card?

I haven't tried it, but I would assume so, yes. Nvidia's version of eyefinity requires you to have SLI, the third monitor needs to be connected to the second card.

I wonder if this causes both of the cards to when idling be under load voltages and higher temps ?

I suppose I could test it out, I have a third monitor I could plug in and activate stereovision with.

yeah, but tricools on high is pretty loud to me (and plenty others I assume). Mid is sort of tolerable to be generous. I guess it has more to do with ambient noise level, your hearing sensitivity, etc.

Don't know. I just followed the recommendation of 550w+ and installed both without trying the Seasonic with the 470.

If you were to plug monitor A to card A and monitor B to card B, for instance I bet both would drop to their proper 2d idle clocks. Apparently in NV surround mode with 3 monitors, the cards do drop to their proper idle mode (confirmed by users) which is funny since the fix hasn't been applied to single cards yet.

ok, I put the smiley faces there to signify the joking/sarcastic nature of my post. the fans are loud as shit, I just would rather have a higher oc than absolute silence. in the winter I'll put them back on medium. the winter in texas, as I'm sure you're all aware, runs from dec 25-jan 3, so that should be a quiet week in my house! (that was also sarcasm for the humor-impaired AT'ers out there).

so do you have 2 120mm in the front along with the 120mm rear and 140mm top? that top 140mm fan of mine vibrates the case too much if I put it on medium. the 300 case is pretty flimsy but has excellent airflow and was cheap. also its not obnoxious looking like a lot of other pc cases.

I just tried this, and it reversed my earlier situation, now my first card is dropping to proper idles and the 2nd is staying under load voltages at idle.

Something to note, I am using one monitor that connects via DVI and the second is an HDTV connected via the HDMI port. When I swap which screen is connected to which card, whichever card that has the HDMI port occupied is the one that stays under load voltages. So perhaps it is related to the demands of the HDMI port.

Too lazy to unbox a DVI monitor I have to try it using two DVI screens at the moment. I'll try that tomorrow though out of curiosity. Thanks for the info.

well I had a feeling you might have been joking but wasn't sure heh

so today I got to play around with the 470 a bit after work hours. I know school (where the 470 is at) is way noisier than home, since the push-pull cpu cooling setup gets drowned in the ambient unlike at home. Even then 70% was the loudest I could withstand. Really wished to bring it to 66% or lower, but I had to sacrifice too much oc so I settled at 70%. 775 core and 1820 memory @1.050v. Not too shabby, though I wouldn't have wanted something this loud at home (would have clocked further down instead).
