I emailed Zotac wanting to know if they plan on having any GTX 580 being shipped to retailers. They said that all GTX 580 cards have been discontinued. That all cards in stock are the last remaining ones you will find.

They did not say it was Zotac or Nvidia choice, but seems kind of odd.

Why would they discontinue Nvidia high end card?

Even retailers that show them in stock, after you place order you get email saying 3-4 week wait, then a few days latter i get email saying order is canceled. lol

Anyone know whats going on?

I really want another Zotac card to match my other one

I reckon the green team are going to surprise us all and really put the hurt on AMD. Nvidia have had loads of time AND have loads of money to get the 580 successor out the door.

Guess no one's going to be getting flagship performance for midrange price after all (unless they buy used).

This would be great for enthusiasts, because competition would drive the prices down, but it has close to no chance of happening. Seems like Nvidia has only tapped out low end Kepler chips on 28nm. Even if they would tapeout a high-end Kepler part or a GTX 580 shrink, it would still take AT LEAST 4 months for retailers to get them.

This also explains why prices have not dropped much at all with Fermi's entire lineup. All Fermi models have been going out of stock and been discontinued from newegg for about 6-8 weeks now. Just look at how many different GTX580 models exist vs. how many are actually for sale. Currently newegg has stocked 28 total models, but only 12 are not "sold out."

Looks like Nvidia is trying to time Fermi's stock depletion with Kepler's release. It came back to bite them with Fermi because they were so late, so hopefully they are not repeating the same mistake this time around.

LOL, this is hilarious. But, I could see it happening... Still, GTX 580 Ultra would be a welcome addition. But it would have to be clocked a good 20% higher for me to consider it. And, of course, not be priced at $699 like the some of the last Ultras to have come out.

Yep, I was surprised how brilliantly they recovered from the 480 GTX. They released a faster card with lower power consumption very quickly. They refined it. That did seriously impress me, because if they didn't happen, the 6970 would have been the single GPU champ.

The 8800GTX Ultra was $800 here in Canada IIRC. But NO, it would NOT be a welcome addition.

Those were some of the worst times for price/perf. I remember I paid $600 for my 8800GTS 640 which wasn't even the high end, and then a year later you could buy a 8800GT with better performance for $200(?). I never want to pay that much for mid-high end cards again.

It's a little silly to extrapolate based on one company's actions. If multiple companies aren't pushing more product out the door, something's definitely up. Could be that Zotac doesn't want to commit to another order when the next generation is right around the corner. They'd probably end up with a lot of extra stock that would need to be discounted.

Zotac is a cheap Korean company. They cant compete with EVGA and ASUS and GIGABYTE so they discontinue and stop makin em, to save their money for the 6xx,

This is what you get for going with a retarded company as your video card,,, you cant SLI now,, if you hadnt been cheap and got a good vendor,, you could have SLI now,, hmmmm thx :awe:

Companies like EVGA and ASUS and GIGABYTE will not phase out the 580 GTX ,,,,, thx gl

That seems awefully high. I paid $600 (USD) for my 8800GTX at Christmas which was already $50 over MSRP.

Yep I paid $59X (can't remember the exact number) for my GTS on launch day (Nov. 8, 2006?) and NCIX wasn't gouging...that price was the same price everywhere in Canada. That was Canadian dollars with tax. Never again.

The $1.99 shipping was a nice gesture though.

Next time someone makes an argument that it was cheaper to buy an 8800GTX than PS3 or Xbox360, I am going to do this :whiste: haha

Since then, I downgraded to 8800GTS 320 for $280, then went down to $175 for HD4890, $190 for GTX470, and $230 for HD6950. I find it harder and harder to justify getting more expensive cards since the minute a new generation or refreshes come out, those $500 cards will lose a lot of value. For instance, we have seen GTX480s dip to $200-300. I don't personally think the GTX580 was worth $200-300 more over the 480 (just my opinion).

As such, OP you should be happy you couldn't order the 580 right now. You are literally buying it at the end of a generation. The best time to buy a 580 was first day of release. My view is that if you are going to buy the best card, get it right away so at least you maximize the usefulness of its added performance. Otherwise, in just 12-15 months, that card will lose $200+ of its value the minute anything that's even 15% faster is out.

Wow, I can't imagine paying $1000 for a video card...$600 was already pushing it for me. These days I'd rather spend my money on something else regardless of whether I can afford it or not.

That's why I don't understand why people want to buy a $500 GPU and keep it for 3-5 years to 'future-proof'. Now you can buy 3x GTX570s for $900, which means soon there will be 1 card as fast as 3 of those for $300. If I made a lot more $, I'd prob. buy the best cards and just resell them right before the next generation. Like if you purchased 3x GTX580s from 1st day, you can probably still resell them for 70% of their value or so. The smartest gamers on our forum always flip the highest end cards before their prices plummet. This allows them to have top-of-the line performance without incurring shocking depreciation like you would have if you purchased a $600+ videocard in 2007 and just kept it all this time.

Except when they mispredict future products and end up with nothing or a crappy GPU for a few months while they wait, and wait and wait some mroe. Gotta suck if you are a BF3 player and that happens to you.

Additionally, smart isn't exactly the word I would use. I'd say it is more ambition than anything else.

Ya, that's always possible. Right now though, if you sell your GTX580, the HD7970 seems to be right around the corner. You can spend the holidays with your friends & family instead of playing videogames. Then come January 10th (rumored launch date), get a new card and continue blasting in BF3! Plus it makes you appreciate that much more the power of the new card after you have been crippled with something like an HD5450.

Regarding the GTX580 being discontinued, that seems strange. If we look at Newegg, it could very well be the case that holiday demand has resulted in half of those cards selling out. I remember there were shortages of HD6970 / 6950 cards on Newegg too. That didn't mean those cards were being discontinued, just that demand had outstripped supply during that short period of time.
