Hi guys,

I am sorry if this has already been asked, but I just bought a MSI GTX 970 OC edition and was worried about the temperatures. My idle temperature is about 35C according to gpu-z and my load temperature is 76C (Playing FC3 at 1080p, x8 AA, all settings maxed).

My concern is that guru3D indicated an idle temp of 29C and load temp of 68C. Other review websites state that there not getting anything above 66C and i'm getting nearly 10 degrees above!

Should I be concerned? I should also note that i accidentally touched the fans while it was spinning cause I wanted to see if the fans were running. My finger accidentally hit it while it was spinning so I might of broke the fan.

EDIT: I should also note that my room is about 23C

Review sites test with 21C ambient, and also a lot use open benches which is almost the perfect scenario for open air cards.

Edit: It's not about your room ambient. The actual ambient temps that matter is inside your enclosed case, or rather, the temp of the air supplied to your GPU fans as intake. I think its something review sites need to clearly show, rather than just actual temps of the GPU, they need to show a Delta Temp (ie. 40C over ambient) result as well.

What case and how are the fans arranged?

I have a thermaltake case (I got it as part of a bundle from Tiger Direct so its not that great). Only have two fans in the case, one that pushes air out at the back and the one from my A50 heatsink.

I have the side of the case opened as well.

Perhaps I broke the gpu fan when i accidentally touched it while it was spinning? Could that be the cause? It was only a fraction of a second and a light touch

Hi, Sorry to bump this but I was just wondering if anyone else could chime in. I was playing FC3 today and the load temps hit 76 again with fans at 65% max. This is with the side of my case open to allow my airflow. Unfortunately, my case isn't that great so I don't have any intake fans. I'm worried that this may shorten the life of my card in the long run.

Thanks

Hi,

In my opinion, those load temperatures will never affect the life spam of your card. But if I were you, I would manage better flow inside my case. If you can afford a GTX 970, you can surely afford 2-3 extra fans for your case.

It is optimal to set the intake fans as the front and bottom and the exhaust ones at the read and top. Also, cable management can play a big role in your case flow.

It would be nice to have the exact model of your thermaltake case and/or a picture of it.

I appreciate the reply. I actually got this card as a gift from a family member. Here is a link to the current case that I have. Its not the greatest and is quite compact as it is.

I'll do your suggestion and buy three more fans. I don't know if this will make much of a difference because I left the side panel off for more airflow. I'm just kinda bummed out that people on other forums have reported temperatures of 68 under max load and i'm at 76. Makes me worried.

If I was you, I would put one intake fan at the front, one of the side panel and one at the bottom. I would put the rear fan as exhaust and two top fans as exhaust as well. Having good airflow inside a case can sometime be better than an open case.

76 is nothing to be worried about. It might be a bit warmer than usual, but it doesn't matter. There might be better setups, but nvidia has stock versions of those cards hitting 80c for normal temps.

GTX 970 specs: "Maximum GPU Tempurature (in C): 98C"

Even for those who like a 20C buffer (which is excessive if you're not running 24/7 like that), you're fine.

The load temps will vary from card to card due to case ventilation, room temps or even consistency of core bin and TIM application. You also see cards that dont OC the same due to some of these factors. My Strix 970 loads at around 78c despite some reviews load temps of 67c, so dont worry about it.

Some GTX 970 models seem to throttle at 80 degrees already though. I'd check your case fans. I've found that especially the side fan is quite good for reducing GPU temps even if its on a very low silent setting.
