ATI's strategy once again proves the best for the midrange- where the money is. Nvidia will need to change unless it is content with losing more market share with bad/mediocre midrange products.

Nvidia really need a version of the Radeon 5770 but I just can't see where its going to come from unless it's another G92?

Maybe they should have used these low bin wafers for coffee machine heating plates.

yep, the only efficiency i've seen so far from the GTX 465 is how well the heat keeps rising. This card has less performance than a 470 while it keeps the same power consumption. I actually like both the 470 and 480 because they justify (err almost) their prices but this thing is just another 5830.

it doesn't keep the same power consumption, the GTX465 has much HIGHER power consumption than the GTX480 (and GTX470)...

it keep the same TEMPERATURE by ramping up its fan even higher, having much higher NOISE levels than the GTX480 (and GTX470) as well.

Anandtech saw something similar:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3745/nvidias-geforce-gtx-465/14

Load noise was higher than the GTX480. There's no two ways about it: the GTX465 is an utter piece of shit.

I'm with you, but, just want to say...to be "fair" to Nvidia (and i'm NOT saying that this is the case here, just saying): imho gotta take into account the pitch and such of the noise, not necessarily just the decibels...It should be the same as the gtx470, right? In which case it can get loud...but fortunately it's not an annoying noise, just air moving...not like a delta (lol, good times!), or fx series card thank god!

This card seems very disappointing to me. I hate how Nvidia is intentionally pricing around AMD.
The 5830 already isn't an appealing product. This is like taking a 5830 and charging $50 more for it. I thought AMD was a bit nuts with the 5830 pricing but this is just crazy. Why would anyone buy this???

I don't think Nvidia has much choice but to fill in holes left in the market by AMD. Nvidia really can't price their parts the same as AMD's similar parts. I think we'd all forgive the GTX480 sins if it was priced at $400 and put pressure on the 5870, but their chip is bigger (on the same process), their board is more complex, they need more memory chips, and their cooler is likely more money to build as well. I think the last thing Nvidia wants is a pricing war with AMD, AMD can likely move furter south of current prices and be comfortable.

The GTX465 is at least as disappointing as the 5830, maybe more... I think this thing is priced a solid $50-$60 too high.

A non-contender it seems. It is seeming more and more like ATi is going to dominate this generation pretty much from the top down. I agree that the 470 and the 480 have their place (albeit a small place, in my opinion) but the 465 is going to need some downward price pressure to make it even close to interesting.

Much more exciting when a good product comes out. I was hoping this would be a more interesting card.

Well, looking at Newegg this morning, the 465 is priced at $279.99 with $7.56 and up for shipping.

The cheapest 5850 is one by HIS for $289.99 with free shipping.

This almost makes the two cards the same price, which in my eyes makes the 465 a complete fail.

Looking at the peformance, I'll definately be going with a 5850 now - was just holding on to see what the competition released, but as it's just as power hungry as the other fermi chips, and has lower performance, there's absolutely nothing going for it.

Looking at the AnandTech review, I see solid performance from the GTX 470

I guess those Nvidia drivers really did the trick

And I think the AnandTech GTX 465 review paints a much better picture than many of the other reviews where you see the GTX 465 performing around a 5830 most of the time :<

Well, seeing as hardware canucks had a much different take on heat/noise/power it seems like Nvidia may be heavily voltage binning these parts. These cards seem like a bit of a gamble, in that you could end up with something that is almost good enough to be a 470, or something that needs more voltage than a 480 and is as loud as a 295.

Other thing weird about the hardware canucs review was their overclocking tests. They were able to get a MASSIVE overclock, but performance barely moved at all. Kind of reminds me of a certain overclocking comparison ABT did awhile back, but this time reveresed! My guess is that both times too much voltage was applied causing the cards to go into halt states and lose a lot of performance. What do you think Apoppin?

And yes, GTX 470 looks significantly better now. You're basically almost getting an HD 5870, but with more noise/heat and cheaper.

I wonder if all GTX465 cards can be flashed to 470s like Guru 3D did. Too bad they didn't give any performance numbers after doing it.

5850 still looks like a better deal than this card. Once you add up power savings the 5850 will more than likely end up being cheaper also.

GTX 465 =

I'm really curious about that too. Are we going to have another ATI 9500pro in this generation?

Link for anyone who missed it

There's something else I want to mention here. I'm not saying you should, by all means no. But we already informed you that the PCB, packaging and GPU on both the GTX 465 and 470 are 100% similar. We flashed a GTX 470 BIOS in one of the GTX 465 cards just to see if it would work, and it ran perfectly fine. Risky yes .. the extra disabled shader clusters could be damaged. But well let's just say, keep this little story in mind.

If Nvidia is voltage binning, we might be seeing a large % of 465's that can flash to a 470 just with higher heat/power consumption. A viable solution though if someone was planning on using aftermarket coolers anyway.

Rather than disabling additional units from each of the GF100 GPU’s 4 Graphics Processing Clusters (GPCs), NVIDIA outright disabled one of the GPCs

So you can unlock a core on a GTX 465? All it takes is flashing your card to a 470?

Nvidia currently prices the GTX480 higher then the 5870, they COULD price it lower or the same, which would force ATI to drop their price, and so on...
They have every choice, they just don't have the interest to start a pricing war, they are content to price their hardware "around" AMD

yeah they probably wont lower the price until sales start sagging and the inventory starts piling up. as it is now there are enough people buying them to justify it. if they would have had a lower price out the gate then they probably would have ran out of supply anyway so why not charge as much as realistically possible.

From the Anantech review...

"We opened this article stating that the “sweet spot” for NVIDIA was 93%. The GeForce GTX 465 is 93% of the price of the average Radeon HD 5850, so NVIDIA would want to deliver at least 93% of the performance. All told they come very close to this at 1920 and 1680, coming within 89% and 93% of a Radeon HD 5850 respectively, showcasing just how good of a job NVIDIA is doing positioning their cards as of late."

If it ran a little quieter and cooler it would be a nice little card.
Mabe some non -reference designs will change this.

The point is that Nvidia will not win a price war when it has a less mature, bigger chip, with yields low enough that they have not put out a single non-harvested part, where they need more memory chips, more expensive power circuitry, and much more elaborate and expensive cooling solutions. Nvidia is at such a performace/cost-of-manufacturing disadvantage that they absolutely do need to slot between AMD designs, putting out a card with equal performance and price to an AMD solution could start a price war which would have no chance of going in Nvidia's favor.

those are all reasons why its decision is more wise. But that doesn't change the fact that it has a choice, it can price it lower it just doesn't want to.

Looks like a good chip, I know 2 people that have it and praises the mobo bfg I believe...

Theres not much you can throw at W7 and it still stands strong. Not a single BSOD or crash since this Rig was born Nov 21 2007 ... thanks

It is what it is. Seems like according to Anandtech it fits right in with the pricing of the card vs the 5850. It is a % less in price for a corresponding reduction in performance.

I am surprised with less cores, ROPs, and memory it still pulls in near what the 470 does from a power perspective.

I think the GF104 will be their best attempt at the sub 250 realm. And these new drivers make the 470 and 480 look better from a price\performance perspective than the launch drivers.
