Would a used EVGA GTX 580 1.5gbs be worth purchasing? I currently have a radeon hd 6870 1gb and it has been great(knock on wood). I have been looking at upgrading for a while though.

Would this card be worth the upgrade? Or go with something else? What would be a good price for a used gtx580?

Thanks!!!

If I remember well, GTX 580 ~ HD 7870 ~ GTX 660 ~ R9 270 < R9 270X < HD 7950 < GTX 660Ti

Check the current prices of the "neighboring" GPU's.. And figure it out.. Also remember the power consumption of the GTX 580 is much much higher than the new cards mentioned above.. So check your PSU.

a 6870 is about as fast as a 260x.

A 580 is about 45-50% faster than a 260x.
A 7870 is about 40-45% faster than a 260x.

The 580 would be a good buy, if you can get it cheaper than a 7870.

You can buy a "new" 7870 for ~160$ on newegg after Mail in rebate.

So this used 580, to be a worthy buy should atleast be under 130$ or so (probably less).

UPDATE:

I just saw a GTX 660 for $179 (Gigabyte) EVGA was $200 another was $190
The R9 270's I saw are $230 onwards..
7870's are starting at $190

Since the GTX 580 is old .. hot and guzzles power.. also less warranty.. It is a good compute card.. So the max buying price should be $150 ??

I agree, 120 is a great buy, 130 is still good, 140 > I would be looking to other avenues due to the 1.5gb or Vram, and the cards run hot. If it is an amp edition or some other third party cooler, I might pay up to 150.

I would like to know what resolution you are running. If you are running 1680*1050 then a 580 at 120 would be a decent buy, assuming you trust the owner to not have ran it into the ground. If you are at 1080p I think it is a little more of a decision. Currently the 580 does not have many issues with its 1.5gb vram unless you are modding skyrim or bf4. I just upgraded from a 580 to a 780ti. The 580 has the muscle to run bf4 with a mix of high and ultra but not the vram. It wasn't a huge issue but about one to three times a round it would hit it and plummet for a second or so. It was easily fixable by changing to a mix of medium and high.

I bring this up as it would appear that you are on a budget and would more than likely keep this card for a couple years. If that is the case and running 1080p I would be hunting for a sale on a 7870 or 660ti around the 150-170 price range.

Also, what are the rest of your system's specs?

The gtx 580 (asus direct cu ii) is still a superb (and giant too) card. Got it since release. I have no need to upgrade yet.

This. I just checked Anand's charts and it's about equal to a 7870 (even faster in some cases). It just has 512mb less RAM and consumes A LOT more power, but it's a great buy if you can pick one up for $140 or less.

But man, that power consumption is through the roof lol:

don't buy a 580 with 1.5 gb of vram move along to some thing with 2 gb
the card is great except for the 1.5 gb vram making it another nv marketing win.
debates over 3gb of vram enough for up coming games are happening

btw I have 2 and people that normally take my free hand me downs , have turn them down .

not saying your wrong , but when bf3 was release so long ago I could run it on ultra with 580 sli at 1200p then upgrading to 1440 the game came to a stop when it hit 1538 -still remember that vram number and what ever people say about vram needs - show me your wallet because nv drains mine by crippling their cards with just enough vram and yet sells sli knowing it's good for a year at max.and peeps give them a thumbs up

I'll take one off your hands for $60 !!! My Zotac GTX580 is lonely.

Sad thing is, the only game I play now is CoH2, which can't do SLI, and that game brings even a Titan to its knees.
