I think these two screen caps pretty much show why the GTX 580 is unimpressive:

Basically, you have a card that's only 32% faster than AMD's flagship from well over a year ago, the 5870, running on outdated drivers. Also, it consumes 57% more power, too. That just isn't impressive, not a year later, and especially because it doesn't even live up to the original performance estimates NVIDIA PR was spouting during last fall (50%+ faster than Cypress, blah blah blah).
6970 is rumored to be late. Do you disagree with this, and why?
Claiming fastest single GPU is a bit pre-mature don't you think? We don't even know if this will be the next 2900XT or R300 yet.
You're claiming many things here without anything to back it up Groover. Why?
1. Brand new arch? Ok sure.
2. Fastest single GPU? Where?
3. Big improvements in crossfire? Where?
4. 6990 in Dec? Confirmed? Where?
Quoting this for if the 6000 series doesnt perform much better.
It is pretty sad to see what some people here are posting... people who used to be so high on an SLI GTX460 set up vs. a 5870 now think CF 6870's vs. the GTX580 is a bad option due to being multi-GPU. I guess with new launches true colors come out. :/
If Cayman isnt at least 30% faster it will be a failure
The thing here is like most people are saying, the GTX580 is simply what the 480 should have been if everything happened as Nvidia wanted, thats why the gains are "small"
Cayman on the other hand should be a full refresh, not just a "tweaked" 5870, so personally I am expecting ~50% more performance, specially in DX11
Tom's Hardware said:Back when the Radeon HD 6870/6850 launched, we were given a date for the Cayman debut. As we inch closer to it and nobody anywhere knows anything about it (board partners haven't seen cards, system builders are still in the dark), it begins to look like there may be delays. From what I've heard, AMD won't even be briefing its partners until after that original embargo date passes.

Speaking of which, looking at the Techreport review, crossfire 6870s have beastly scaling... Nearly 100% in every single game... If this follows through to the high end, we can expect some unreal numbers from the 6990
I don't see the harm. So long as it doesn't interfere with over clocking or games they can limit till the cows come home (and I don't even own cows so that might be a while).
Though Furmark was handy for easily checking stability as it would report artifacts. Crysis works as well but I actually have to pay attention.
Oh geez.....
Who cares? If performs how it is supposed to, then it isn't a problem.
Overall this looks like a win for nV.
Thank you!
A review that finally includes 1280x1024 on the new hardware! So very helpful to my situation. Really really really really wish Anand would do the same! Ya know, we aren't all enthusiasts out here =P
Looks like a great card to stir the competition! Keep it comin' red and green =)
2% faster 5970?

" Knowing this, would we take it over the GTX 580? No, but the reason for this is actually a bit more complicated than some simple graphs would have you believe. You see, it took nearly a year for the HD 5970 to reach the performance level it currently boasts and there have been plenty of teething problems along the way. Dual GPU cards also live and die by driver support and all too many times users have to wait months to enjoy full performance in the newest games. Granted, AMD’s Catalyst app profiles have done a lot to alleviate this issue but we will always choose a single GPU solution over Crossfire, SLI or even dual core cards like the HD 5970.
